I'm come to the end of my winter Zwift subscription, only to find the weather has taken a turn for the worst! I always feel I'm not getting the most from Zwift anyway only using it a couple of times a week, maybe one free ride one interval session - keeps the legs turning.
Anyway I want to keep using the turbo occasionally without a subscription service, I realized I have no idea how to use it on it's own! The turbo (Elite Novo) came with a bit of software that controlled resistance but even that seemed to be a subscription, with some training programs.
I thought I might be happy just controlling the resistance somehow and watching a video, but I came across onelap.cn which is a Zwift clone - OK this is all in Chinese and my Zwift PC is now communist state monitored but it seems to give a portion of the Zwift experience for free. It even hooked into my ANT+ turbo and cadence sensor no problem. Training was a bit freaky with the avatar on the flat while peddling a 8% hill, but on free ride the resistance matched the visible terrain. Very few other in game avatars which suits me as they slowed down my old PC.
I think for my purposes onelap will probably do but I'd be interested in hearing if others use
their smart turbos without subscriptions?
Road grand tours was free for a while, might be worth a look. I've used it a few times and it seemed pretty good.
