Shocking Death of A Messenger – petition

In August 2009, former Ontario Attorney General Michael Bryant was involved in a fatal collision between his car and a cyclist, Darcy Allan Sheppard. According to media and witness reports, following the initial collision, Sheppard, who was clutching onto Bryant’s car, was brutally killed as Bryant swerved his car toward trees, a mailbox, and a fire hydrant, slamming Sheppard’s body into these objects (1). Witnesses at the scene reported that Bryant driving Sheppard into these objects appeared to be deliberate, and said Bryant clearly “meant to knock him off.” (2)
Many members of the public are shocked and outraged with Bryant’s conduct—not only on the night of the accident, but also in his actions in the days, months, and years since. Bryant has also consistently demonstrated a lack of integrity and an absence of compassion toward the victim. In the days following the collision, Bryant even hired a PR company that shamefully worked to publicly discredit the victim (3).
Many members of the public also feel that Bryant received preferential treatment by the police, media, and justice system as a result of his political power. Moreover, many believe that criminal charges against Bryant should not have been dropped, and that the dismissal of these charges was not a reflection of the facts of the case, but a consequence of Bryant having exploited his political clout in his own favor.
Given the above, but also just as a matter of very basic decency, we call on Penguin Canada to halt plans to release Bryant’s book. For Penguin Canada or Michael Bryant to attempt to profit, in any way, from the death of Darcy Allan Sheppard is profoundly shameful, shocking, and offensive. We call on Penguin to stop the publication of “28 Seconds,” and to sever their business relationship with Michael Bryant.

IanMunroFree MemberThis paints a somewhat different picture.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Bryant_(politician)I’ve no idea which version of events is the more accurate.
StoatsbrotherFree MemberSo the cyclist was drunk and there is video of him attacking Mr Bryant… ? And had mental health issues and had attacked other motorists recently?

Perhaps we could let the Canadian legal system deal with this?
Thread Fail
mcmoonterFree MemberThe appointment of a PR company before a trial sounds fishy to me.

cynic-alFree MemberPolice had alleged that Sheppard died after grabbing onto a car on Bloor Street West following an altercation with the driver.
In court, Peck said Bryant and his wife panicked when Sheppard came into their car.
Forensic experts concluded Sheppard was trying to attack Bryant, Peck added.
Video of the incident shows Sheppard leaned into the driver side of Bryant’s car near the steering wheel, and was holding onto the car as it moved forward, veering to the wrong side of the road.
Peck’s report said Sheppard’s left torso hit a fire hydrant located close to the south curb in area of 131 Bloor St. West. The blow dislodged him from Bryant’s car, and caused him to strike his head either on the curb or a raised portion of the roadway.
“The impact was fatal,” according to Peck’s executive summary.
“Our conclusion is that Mr. Bryant had been attacked by a man who unfortunately was in a rage,” Peck later said outside court. “In such circumstances, he was legally justified in attempting to get away. The case could not be proved.”
That is one ****ed up Prosecutor/legal system.
WoodyFree MemberThe wiki account bears no relation to the video footage and eyewitness reports. Was it written by his PR Co. by any chance?
Quite disgraceful.

Check the history – the video has been added and removed several times. Also see the discussion http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Michael_Bryant_(politician)#Now_magazine_says_Sheppard_.22pushed.22
In this case I’d suggest that Wiki isn’t a reliable source of accurate information, as the legal stuff gets in the way. I’m also curious who exactly the chap is who removed the latest inclusion (and many of the others – and appears to be making policy on this article) and what relation he has to Mr Bryant, given his #1 interest is Canadian Law and #2 is Canadian Politics.
StoatsbrotherFree MemberSo CBC – the equivalent of the BBC – is also complicit here – and the stuff about the cyclist’s other attacks on motorists is made-up?
Ok…
I don’t know what happened here – but this lynch mob petition raises questions for me
mcmoonterFree MemberFor me it’s immaterial if the rider had an altercation with anyone else before the incident. He was clearly hit by the car, which then took off. There is no justification for what happened next.
D0NKFull MemberSomething dodgy going on, sounds a little like road rage on both counts, difference being car occupants end up “scared” cyclist ends up dead. Also seems to be some pretty nasty tactics used since the incident.
HermanShakeFree MemberSomeone ended up being killed and the people closest to them at the time left him to die. This is what happened if you sieve the faeces out. It doesn’t matter what the initial situation was.
As the witness says, the guy was bombing the wrong way with the chap hanging on!? He’s not the T1000, he was a man.
He may have grabbed the wheel aggressively, but who had their feet on the accelerator and brake?
xiphonFree Member£10 says the messenger would have been fine if he had both brakes on his fixie 😉
