This is on my bucket list and I’d like some recommendations for a good base please. I like the look of Sustans pass but open to any suggestions.

    Thanks in advance

    Innertkirchen.

You can do the classic Susten, Furka (of James Bond Goldfinger fame) and Grimsel loop.

And also Gross Schiedegg over to Grindelwald (via Reichenbach Falls of Sherlock Holmes fame).

Meiringen is a nicer (and sunnier) place in the valley than Innertkirchen. Also slightly better connected if you want to do other Berner Oberland stuff (Brienz, Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, Lucerne etc). Nothing particularly wrong with Innertkirchen, but it just feels like a small road junction village with limited shops / food / accommodation options.

The two are linked by a little single carriage railway (called MIB) if you do want to nip between them without riding over the lump of rock that splits the valley.

I’d second that Grosse Scheidegg is a nice ride and the top bit is traffic free apart from the post buses. Grindelwald is a bit of an international tourist overload compared to the quieter Haslital valley you have ridden from.

If you have a gravel bike or MTB you can ride between the two or from Meiringen there is a signposted bike route climb up onto the Hasliberg. I have mtb’d a bit round there with a local guide – not a great deal and nothing special but quiet enough and didn’t seem to get moaned at.

Stay in Luzern, gorgeous city and ride from there.  Lived there for 5 years. Cheaper than the tourist areas.

I just went into komoot and 370 routes came up. Very good signage out there plus if you have a mechanical put the bike on the train.
