rip off parts

can anyone explain to me why tryes and pads are so expensive?
pads are around the £20 mark and tyres can be around the £40 which is not far off car prices!

so, other than the quantity of material is the manufacturing methods and costs for a car tyre significantly different to a bicycle one?

How many car tyres sell each year compared to good mtb tyres? (and £40 is right at the bottom of the price range which is not equivalent to a £40 mtb tyre)

Pads are 5.50 a set but agree on the tyres does seem steep. I paid 12 quid for mine though.

No point comparing budget car tyres to premium MTB tyres.

A top end bike tyre may be £50 but the tyres for my car range from £47 to £162 a corner.
If you want to place your family in a metal box whos only contact with the ground is 4 pieces of rubber made by Event or Dark Horse then the £47 tyres are for you.

£40 will buy you a pretty rubbish no-name car tyre, or one of the absolute highest quality/price bike tyres. But £20 will get you a perfectly good bike tyre and £6 gets you a set of pads so your complaint seems to be that when you go looking at expensive stuff it’s expensive.

(Oh and I’ve still got a set of no-name ditchfinders on the back of the Focus and while I suppose some people would call it exciting, diesel foci aren’t supposed to tailslide and the novelty wears off fast.)

Oh PS, I didn’t find the Rubber Queens so amazing as to be worth the price of admission, I think people just got overexcited because they’re a good Conti.

Car parts are as said above much larger scale production so costing is less. Also not sure how a cheap re-mould car tyre would fit and how it would affect the handling on my bike, it’s like saying that you could buy a car for the price of your bike, they don’t do the same job now do they!
My black chilli rubber queens were fairly expensive at £40 each but they are a good tyre which help me enjoy my riding so worth the cash in my opinion. I’ve also bought pads much cheaper than £20 a set – shop around, superstar red kevlar pads are £35 for 4 pairs, i got them last week for £25 on offer so even cheaper and they are supposed to be pretty decent.

XTR ICE pads are £37 apparently 😯

BTW car parts tend to last thousands of miles, bike parts….not so much, set of pads per ride anyone?

becuase we will pay the prices – see the folk here arguing that £40 is ok for ” premium” bike tyre.
I can get a michellin, Pirelli or Contintal tyre for my car for less than that.
Some Disc pads for bikes are more than disc pads for the car look at the size difference. I find it hard to beleive economies of scale account for it all. Basically any “hobby” attaches a premium because folk already dont need the stuff but wanmt it …badly enough to pay too much for it

Have a look at the prices of premium performance motorcycle parts, tyres, pads e.t.c 😯 obviously have to take more (forces, loads) but comparable in terms of scale with bike parts in some cases.

I don’t think I’ve ever paid more than £25 for a bike tyre.

No need to if you shop around and keep an eye on the classifieds.

problem I find with high bike tyre prices is it stops me trying other brands. I am reasonably happy with what I run so I buy it again as I can’t afford to buy a tyre I don’t like.

As for car tyres – the car tyre market is crazy. My car uses 195/55/15 which cost about 40% more than the slightly smaller 195/50/15 – that is down to economies of scale. The prices also change daily – in November I wanted a particular brand/model of tyre. They had been £66 each all year then went up to £88 over a couple of days. They then dropped to £50 so I snapped them up and the next day they were sold out everywhere. 2 days later they were back in stock and the cheapest price was £104 each!

Dry, rain, ice, snow – nothing phases them. I will put the dedicated summer ones back on after Easter but I will miss these as they have transformed my car from being very nervous in any damp/greasy conditions to feeling like a brand new car.

It comes back to the age old argument about fork prices. Someone always argues £500! You could get a shock for my M3/911/fiesta for £50!

economy of scale, plus the fact that the “market” insist on new products every 12 months. This keeps prices high. If you want cheap tyres, go second hand, plenty of people buy tyres, don’t get on with them and sell them, likewise pads can be had for cheap if you’re not fussy about who makes them.
