Years ago my old man had an insulated case about the size of a cigarette packet which contained a wee carbon type rod that could be lit and placed in the case to keep your hands warm. Anyone know of something similar?

The zippo-style ones are great but I;'d get the Whitby Warmer as it's exactly the same and half the price.

edit: actually, having searched they aren't as cheap as they used to be. Mine was a freebie but I do really rate it.

Mrs loves the zippo one I bought her. She suffers with Reynards so it's an absolute bonus when we're out and about.

We used the zippo ones in canada, they are fine, but if you take them out of your pocket and they are subjected to extreme cold (it was -20c) they would instantly go out.
Mrs mac has the firefly ones, just as good but they cost us half as much.
Ebay search for petrol hand warmer will yield a pair for 16 quid, my zippos were 15 each.
Recommended from us.

We've got some of these: http://www.kathmandu.co.uk/pocket-hand-warmer-2-pack-transparent.html

Not sure they last an hour (but they do last a good while if you keep them and your hands nice and insulated) but they are pretty good. Useful for injuries that need heat or calming down my hand pains after a ride too.

Zippos are good but can be a bit flaky to light. They rely on warmth to keep the petrol vapourising to feed the catalytic burner so when in use it needs to be tucked away in a warm pocket, not one exposed to cold. It also helps if it is lit in a warm environment for the same reasons.

I don't get how these things work.... a bonfire in your pocket?

I used to have something that burned compressed charcoal (I think) when I went fishing. I found the best solution was to move to the southern hemisphere (24c this evening at 2345).

Cold is overrated.

My thoughts exactly!
Qwerty, not quite a bonfire, it's a catalytic process, rather than a full-on naked flame.
The Whitby one looks like good value, I've sort of thought about getting a hand warmer, the ones like Esme linked to don't get good reviews, generally.
