Renault Captur – thoughts?

daughters after a new (to her) automatic car and has asked me to ask you for advice (of course she has 😀 )

first up is this bad boy.  id guess theres not much love for french cars on here but is there anything for her to look out for specifically?  and any alternatives to suggest around that price mark?

I’ve had a couple on rental.

I preferred the (cheaper) Dacia – it felt less plasticcy.

Nobody has ever thought about a Renault Captur.

Dunno what engine it is but I know someone who has an auto-one and they really like it. Feels fine as a passenger too. It’s not a luxury car, but it seems nice enough to me, fairly well equiped and seems quite practical.

Looks quite nice and modern, seems to drive fine, and as a 6’4 passenger it didnt feel too cramped, even in the back seat although I had to request the front passenger seat be moved forward a notch or two!

She’s an older lady though if that makes any difference!

We had a 2015 renault scenic. It wasn’t great for reliability. But in every other respect it was great. The 2014 ones were staggeringly bad, based on feedback on 2 owners from new

We have a Honda jazz auto passed down from my did when he stopped driving. The 1.4 auro drives well other than annoying down shifts when using cruise control on the motor way. But so far reliability is fantastic. The interior is very clever space wise with fold flat rear seats

No idea on relative costs but I’d rather buy a Honda

The pensioner mobile ! I know three people who own one, all pensioners. They were very popular in France in 2017, with pensioners.

They’re a Clio on steroids but the Clio is the better car: lighter, handles better, more economical.

It’s a diesel so won’t have a motorgate engine, automatic so the clutch won’t explode or the gearbox fail. That leaves you with the fact it’s French. I’ve run French cars reliably for 29 years, currently a Zoe, I guess I must be very lucky or maybe the cars realise where they are and behave.

I just can’t abide a car where the first decimal of the engine displacement is an odd number. 1.3/1.5/1.7/1.9 – am oot. I guess because they’re usually French. What is that about?

ok, I once owned a mini that was badged 1.3i, but the badge was soon off and it was once again a 1275 in my head.

I don’t hate French cars per se, a 2.0 Renault Clio was a fine fine car indeed and we love our Zoe

My parents are on their 2nd captur.
They like them.
They haven’t had any problems.
I had a scenic, i hated it.
My wife had a clio, which we both liked and was overall a cheap car to run.

thanks, a mixed bag then but overall an uninspiring car, but my daughter will be fine with that, its just A to B, and id guess reliability will be highest priority.

My mum bought a low milage second hand one from the dealers 2 months ago. Looks nice, drives nice but has spent more time at the dealers with various electrical gremlins than with her.

Might just be one of the bad ones as with any make and model though.

My parents had one for several years (have just got rid of it due to “it’s X years old so let’s sell it before it starts going wrong”).  It was perfectly reliable and didn’t need anything except routine servicing and tyres.  On the other hand it felt really cheap & plasticy inside and the ’95’ engine was completely gutless.

I had a look at one, I had to prove I wasn’t a robot first.

Had one as a rental car once. Managed to get myself, Mrs Vlad, an XL Diverge and two weeks worth of holiday shit in the car, and I’m 6’4″.

Oh, and it had a great big dent in the door when we picked it up from Glasgow airport.

It didn’t breakdown and it didn’t consume a massive amount of fuel, but everything else about it was entirely forgettable…

I considered buying one, along with a bunch of other compact crossovers and ultimately went for the EcoSport, purely because the Ford has better standards of equipment fitted.
I was in the luxurious position of having loads of different cars to drive as part of my job, so could find the annoying little things during a couple of hundred miles ferrying them around. I liked the Captur, excellent seats, which seems to be a French thing, decent engine, handling and ride quality were about par for the course, and like many similar cars popular with Motability clients, because of the higher seating position, which makes getting in and out much easier, something I’m really appreciating now I’m finding problems with my hip joint. The Dacia has improved dramatically over the last couple of years and is worth considering.

Why diesel? It seems old for the money too.

There are quite a few petrol, auto Skoda fabias on autotrader for that kind of money, many younger than that.

Auto really cuts the choice at that budget, maybe need to be prepared to travel to collect.

Cant really advise on the Captur, but I’ve had 2 Meganes with the same 1.5 dci engine,and wouldnt hesitate at having another. 100k + miles on them with no problems apart from the usual service items.

The outlaws bought a used one about 12 months ago. It’s been fine. No issues. Does what it’s to intended for them, easy to get in and out of, easy to drive auto as well.

Came here to pretty much say the same. Driven quite a few different makes and models over the years and the Meganes were up there.

Yeah, I had it in a Dacia and then a 2016 Captur which we only sold a few weeks ago. It was an unexciting car, with a relatively small boot for it’s size (filled with a family shop for our 5) and a weird lip on the tailgate which meant I couldn’t put a bike rack on it. The only problem we had with it in 4 years was the pollution filter warning started coming on sporadically this year after the 20mph limits were applied in Wales and we hadn’t done any long journeys in it for a long time. I don’t miss the car, but then it’s just a car!

Got the Petrol version of that in 1.3 tce Manual. Since February. Done 4500 miles so far and it’s been faultless. It gets used as the weekend shopping trolley, it’s been to Edinburgh and back from Lancashire multiple times and heathrow. And it just gets on with it.

Bit plasticy inside but it doesn’t rattle like the Ford Puma I had as a courtersy car did. Seats are comfortable, manual gearbox is precise and engine sits at 80 mph on the motorway quietly.

The Diesel is supposed to be nicer and pretty much bomb proof.

Mine does 40 to 45 mpg for the petrol.

My dad had one, but much prefers the Jazz auto hybrid he’s got now.
