Hi, tried sawing/dremmel before but wondered if a plumbers blow torch would be hot enough to remove some shifter bosses from and old steel road frame.

Is it likely to do any harm to the lug brazing?

Any horror stories or words of advice before I set about it, don’t have a steady enough hand/enough patience to go the saw file route again.

I doubt a plumbers torch would get hot enough. You can get MAPP cylinders for the more professional ones which might do it. I’d use an angle grinder.

if you do go down the mapp gas route you will need to protect the lug brazing from transferred heat being conducted along the tubing. standard way to do this is with wet rags (the water will evaporate)

i looked into this a while ago. but found out that some low end frames (particually newer ones, i’m talking 80’s/90’s not 70’s/80’s) my have welded braze ons rather than brazed on, if that makes sense. I decided not to try as i thought mine might be weldd.

google brought up some good results, found this quickly:

    Anyone else?
Google suggests torch may work, might just give it a go.
Thought the techy frame builder types might have answered.
