I need to create some demo videos of using SW tools for an upcoming trade show (MWC). Anyone recommend a decent tool for recording the screen or a window in Windows 7?

Well I never, been using it for years and never knew it could record the screen!

Teamviewer does recording and can convert it video to an AVI – not sure if it only records remote sessions though.

Edit: VLC…. who’da thunk it. Will remember that.

Free or does thou have a budget?

Do you need the sw to only show the sequences or do you need them to be interactive?

Don’t mind paying. Will have to edit the whole thing afterwards to add captions, speed it up etc to turn 5 mins into 10 second summary etc.

Probably use Windows Movie Maker for the editing……

VLC just seems to endlessly self capture the screen, looks like an early 80s music video….

No idea where it’s saving the file to…

Techsmith Snag-it and the moving capture version – Camtasia.

However, doesn’t Win7 have something included?

Yes, that’s what I was thinking of: aka Problem Steps Recorder.
    Very basic!
Camtasia is great. Pricey though iirc.

£220 all in, seems pretty reasonable (given my company will be paying rather than me).

So what do I use to record the problem with Problem Steps Recorder?

I’ve used CamStudio in the past and has worked fine for me.

    Free as well.

Might be what you are after

My experience of Camtasia is good, albeit a few years ago. I’d like to assume it’s got better and not worse 🙂

+1 Camtasia. Easy to use when you’ve had a play, plus you can add captions and other stuff.

Well I’m using Camstudio, which seems very good. It’s free, but puts loads of other crap on your machine, so you have to uninstall all that first, which is a slight pain…..
