Can anyone recommend a decent set of shoes and pedals? Probably not white disco slippers as they are going to be used for year round commuting and longer sometimes multi day rides 😉

As for pedals, Shimano SPD-SLs are really nice. I'm currently using some old Ultegra ones.

got some Carnac Eclipses which are nice, but i don't think they are made anymore.

As for pedals using a set of Time's they work what more do you need. Although i am tempted to try a set of Speedplays, colour match to the bike….

Shoes- Anything by Sidi, no question.
Pedals- Speedplay Zeros, a little faffy to begin with, but no brainers to clip in etc when sorted. Plus the cleats last for ages, as opposed to the looks and SPD-SL's

What are your feet like? If you've got wide feet, then try Northwave for size. I suffered recently and couldn't find anything from Sidi, Spesh, Pearl Izumi that was comfy, but the NW ones have transformed my riding.

Pedals – Look Keo Carbon work very well for me. Always used Look and have never seen need to change. If you do go for Look Keo, the cleats are quite soft so make sure you get some cafe cleat covers (or whatever they're called) – save you going over on your backside when you're commuting and will save your cleats too.

for shoes, go for Specialized Pro BG – most fantastic road shoes ever owned. used to ride Sidi, but once tried Spec' shoes I've never looked back (Spec shoes have lovely space in the toe box, whilst Sidi are very tight around the toes) – so try before you buy… better still, what MTB shoes do you wear and what have you found comfy?

I wear spesh mtb shoes so thats probably a good recommendation

Spesh do make nice fitting shoes. Sidi make pimptastic shoes, but, you got to spend to get the quality uppers and they skimp on the insole. Many, many people who buy sidi's come back to the shop i work in to get inserts…

But, a colleague hates spesh and reckons the wedge nearly wrecked his knees.

Mavic shoes are pretty nice, sensible fit, nice supple uppers, good support.

Pedal wise, look keo or shimano for cheap and cheerful. Speedplay or time if you have wonky knees.

simon – those are exactly what I'm thinking of getting. Would go for Spec BG, but their current road shoes appear narrower than the couple of year old MTB shoes I have, and given my current foot injury even those are a bit tight. I know I'm extremely sad, but I don't suppose you could tell me how much they weigh?

I wear 5-10s on Wellgo flats on my commuting Dawes Audax.

    Is that wrong?

if you have slim feet then shimano shoes fit well but i use an insole with mine for a snug fit without over tightening the straps.
i use the specialized BG insole that comes in 3 different arch heights to suit your foot and varus/valgus wedges to match the pronation/supination of your foot. i think the specialized shoes come with a bit of tilt built in

got those cheap wiggle shoes – they're great. them and some cheap look stuff – couldn't believe the difference over XC mtb shoes and pedals. almost like an extra gear!
