£10.50 job done (oh you'll need a lump hammer or sledgehammer)

Something like this would do you, I used to split tons of logs (literally as I was a tree surgeon) with a similar one;

I got mine off ebay for about £12 - search for 'splitting maul'.

I will second Konaboys recommendation.

I got one a couple of months back and it has split everything I have hit with it. Including the patio slab when I missed the log.

And eye protection. Chatting to a colleague about woodcutting yesterday - friend of his lost her eye from a flying splinter.

Fiskars - get something that will last a life time

Mauls such as this do have a habit of throwing the wood around so you might want to try this

Don't be tempted by 'wood grenades' they're rubbish!

I split all mine, most of it with a Roughneck Splitting Mawl (Screwfix). Easy. Some cross-grained woods are impossible though.

Horse Chesnut is the worst ever, especially near the base. That's where the Wood Grenade and a sledge hammer are brilliant. Not quick but nothing much else will easily separate that stuff.

be carefull with those log grenades, or more speciffically get a BIG sledge hammer, Ive just got a small sledge, 12" long and whacking the log grenade sends quite severe shocks up your arm and gives you a bloody sore elbow. Going to invest in a 2 handed sledge, or maybe even one of these:

Horse chestnut....a chainsaw.....
Yes I did use my chainsaw on half the Horse chestnut, but the wood grenade was faster in the end. Chainsawing along the grain is horrible, and the fibres clogged the oil feed several times.

Get a decent quality splitting axe and your sorted...

Plus you don't get to feel any more manly than when you're outside in the snow, splitting wood with an axe to keep your family warm.

I was just testing it was really shockproof - never batted an eyelid when I swung the axe.
