So Mr MC is bound to the sofa with his broken tibia and I have kindly been given a voucher for tesco films which means we can get LOADS out! But now have a dilemma as no idea what to get out. We recently watched Blood Diamond (loved it), like action, thrillers, crime, horror, (not rom coms!!).

    What do you suggest??

In Brugge. Watched this the other night, and not expecting much was pleasantly surprised. Colin Farrell was pretty funny in it!

Second for in Brugge, Phone Booth is pretty good to for Farrel – although don't watch Alexander whatever you do! Two hours of Alexander goin 'We're gonna beat da barbarian in da desert, right up' in Farrel's North Dub nasal whine was enough to make me puke!

Taxi 1, 2, and 3 starring Sami Neceri – (French comedy!!!) and one of my favourites

Dasboot – Wolfgang Peterson. Bit dated but one of my favourite films of all times

Taken – starring Liam Neeson's supposed to be excellent.

After Blood Diamond I decided to take DiCaprio seriously again. The Departed and Body of Lies are both marvellous.

    Also really enjoyed:

    Pride and Glory
    Rescue Dawn
    Taken

There must be more African stuff apart from Blood diamond and LKoS too. Anyone?

No problem. Sometimes in April was fantastic if somewhat harrowing. Goodbye Bafana was a nice perspective on South Africa / Mandela.

Can't think of any others of the top of my head, we just did the DVD of the TV series Heat Of The Sun at work but that's not in the same league as the above. Although not African, City of God would be good too if you've not seen it.

Oh and the film of The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency was quite sweet.

Watched "Taken" last night and was impressed and my all time fave (well for the last couple of months) is "Layer Cake", its British film making at its best.

(Mr MC posting) MRMW I loved insomnia, fargo and memento so will have to look out the rest of your list seems we have similar tastes.

Lots of stuff listed ive seen and rated (Cookoo's nest, Brazil, Alien) so there is clearly some taste here!

A room mate in hospital in Thonon recommended TV show box sets. I loved the first series or so of Lost that was on Ch.4 – are the later series worth seeing or has it lost (sorry) its way? 24 seems to be much loved but it sounds, well, stupid, to me. BBC has decided to make The Wire impossible to keep on top of (every night, are you having a laugh) is it worth the effort? Any other gems (we dont have Sky) that are worth looking out – Battlestar Galactica sounded intriguing.

    1. yes, watch the whole of the wire.
    2. watch the whole of band of brothers.
    3. watch the whole of sopranos.

    that should keep you going.

    4. watch 36.
    5. watch the other films i recommended.

Ah but the Wire is repeated back to back on Fri eves at stupid o'clock in the morning. Set recorder and then watch in one go at your leisure. Am totally loving the Wire, class telly.

Mrs MC back again! I've just been given "deadwood" and "dexter" box sets to take home for Mr MC, anyone seen these? any good? I don't think I've even heard of either of them!

    theflatboy
    Free Member

deadwood's pretty good. dexter's ok at first but i got bored of it. deadwood stars lovejoy, so that's a pretty massive selling point. neither of them are up to the standards of the wire, sopranos or band of brothers, though deadwood's ok.

i would put deadwood on the 2nd tier of tv drama, with things like the shield and six feet under.

TV boxsets are the way forward for viewing while out of action.

Try Boston Legal. It's a pure joy to behold.
