Hi all! I have been invited on a 2-3 day 'tour', if you can call it that. I don't think I can use my road bike as it has no rack mounts so I would have to use my MTB. It's a 1×9 setup, but I suppose that will have to do. Anyway, what sort of brand/type of rack should I be looking at for putting on a 456? We will be carrying (outdoor) sleeping gear, a waterproof, some food, drink, essentials etc, and I will also be carrying a Camelbak.

Apologies if this is a vague question, but I really have no idea about racks. Do I need to worry about disk brake specific racks? I will probably need a bag and some fixing apparatus too…

    Any help/abuse welcome.

how about a Carradice SQR Trax + a bar bag?

disc specific racks are rarely needed IME – the rack can just be spaced out a bit on the disc side if clearance is needed.

Tubus racks are a load better than others but at a price to match. Old man mountain racks have a decent rep. I'd avoid tortec or blackbourne.

Other option is the carradice bag – long flap camper for the win

For Bivying I use a Topeak Beam Rack
you have to nip 'em up really tight as they can turn but I don't have any trouble with mine with light loads (sleeping bag, Mat, Bivy Stove)

    me too

although next time I'd put the sleeping bag and mat in the dry bag onto the handle bars, use the rack for gear and keep the weight off my back.

I use a tubus disc spercific rack mount and it is great. I have mates who have bought them and a seatpost clamp with rack mounts on the bottom of them to allow for this.

also the tubus disco will fit a 26" mtb wheel or a 700cc wheel. Can be fitted using a QR at the bottom and doesn't need rack mounts.

think mine is a great versatile bit of kit for changing amongst bikes.
