Out at Swinley this weekend we had issues with a friend's Triad. It stuck down, only giving up about half of the travel. The 3 position lever was also stuck in place. Cycled the pressure in it a few times, but that didn't seem to shift it. Rode on, and by the end of the ride it was back to full stroke, but the rebound wasn't working properly and the lever moves but selects no modes at all 🙁

Anyone had anything similar, and was it fixable without sending to TF... Possibly related, had to make a new bottom bush/axle for it as the old one was really worn. It was a tight fit when we put it back in the frame. Could this have caused the issue? If so I'll file it down a bit more.

Cheers,

Richard

It was certainly a well-known problem from a batch of Triad shocks from three or four years ago; some duff seals meant that things more often than not went awry - it happened to my wife's. At the time I rang Specialized and they sent me a new seal kit.

It may be a warranty job, depending on whether your friend is the original owner..? Might be worth getting in touch with Specialized before TFT.

Because the old one had about 1/2 mil of wear on it, and we were in a workshop 🙂

Did you fit the seal kit Househusband? If so, I assume it's a relatively simple job? I've got one that came with my DHX Air which might be suitable.

I kinda agree Ralph. But if you were short of cash and time, standing in a company workshop with a machinist of 35 years experience, might it not cross your mind to make one? It's only a piece of steel bar with a hole in it 😉

Yup. Wasn't hard - just have to be careful taking the shock apart, as it will want to come apart violently!

Remember more now, actually; the shock didn't fail at the time when the batch issue was acknowledged by Specialized - it got stuck down within the last eighteen months ago! I contacted Specialized when the issue surfaced and they sent me the seal kit anyway as they couldn't tell from frame serial numbers which may be affected.

Did you have the malfunctioning lever effect as well? Cheers for the help BTW.

Honestly can't recall. I guess that if the shock is stuck down then the ProPedal, etc, will be screwed.

Cheers for the help BTW.

Not a problem! Am a but rusty on the timescales, but her bike only gets used once or twice a year - horses are her thing.

If the lower bush is stiff that can cause the shock to stick down, because instead of the bush moving the shock trys to hindge in half- result air going from the positve chamber to the negative chamber.
