Some people prefer to manage, some prefer just to do stuff. I’m the latter, my wife is the former. So long as there are viable career paths for both, do whichever you prefer. There is something to be said for doing the management to avoid having someone else shitter doing it to you.
Most people in our area of work seem to view management as an inevitable process but I successfully avoided it for the entirety of my career. When I dabbled I mostly found it pretty painful having to hand-hold junior staff to do stuff I’d have been quicker and better doing myself. There were some exceptions who were a pleasure to mentor but rarely.
