Messing about with a cable will confuse the PC. Unplug the cable, reboot the laptop.

Right, does it say it’s connected to wireless? How do you know?
What operating system are you on? (Assuming windows something) Do you know how to open up a command window? If you do, type IPCONFIG /ALL

What does it say? Does the wireless adaptor have an IP address?
Do you have some DNS servers set?
    Can you ping bbc.co.uk?
    Can you ping 212.58.253.67?

    What he said.

Also, are you connected to wireless, or *your* wireless?
