    Old PC running on XP freezes on XP start up screen and keyboard not responding so I can’t start up in any other mode.Any ideas about what I can do. Any advice will be gratefully received.

    Does your keyboard work? – borrow someone elses?
    otherwise you could try booting up to your windows CD, just put your windows CD in the tray and restart. Format it and reinstall windows and you’ll lose everything though.

    If it’s a wireless keyboard,borrow a usb one,it’ll probably work ok

    no not a wireless keyboard and reinstalling windows and losing everything doesn’t sound good.

    Try using a PS2 keyboard rather than a USB one, sometimes works.

    Mash F8 on bootup, it should take you to a menu. Choose “safe mode with command prompt, then at the prompt type chkdsk /f
