Where you see (@ 1:50k anyway, not sure about 1:25k) a footpath with the red/purple diamonds/dots on is there a definitive rule for whether bikes are allowed on it or is a footpath still a footpath? Cheers.

Think it means it's a national route

Dots = Access rights vary.
Diamonds - National Trail, footpaths and so not usually bike-friendly, I believe.

Yep, I know that...

...but what does that mean in practice?

Do you mean 'Other route with public access'?

You'd have to look at the definitive map to determine whether bikes were allowed, but in general, if it leads to/from other types of right of way on which bikes are allowed, you're likely to be okay. If it has only a footpath at one end, you're probably not okay.

I mean "National Trail, European Long Dist..."

Think I get the idea though!

It's a honeypot route and best avoided...

The diamonds don't denote any right of way information AFAIK. They will follow the line of a footpath/bridleway/BOAT, whatever and it's the markings for that right of way which matter.

Gotcha - general consensus is that they don't over-ride the underlying "status" of the right of way then. Cheers all.
