If I grease the inside of new outers (by rubbing grease on the cable), will it make them better or worse?

Worse in the long run I'd think. It will attract filth and muck and work it inside, and decent quality cables run with little enough friction as they are.

Run full length outers to the rear, fewer ends to get contaminated, they last for ages.
