New OS Maps pricing

So it’s jumped again – £28.99 per year now. I’ve been a subscriber for more years than I remember and have paid each year as I think it’s a good App and I like to support the work they do but step too far this time.

I don’t mind a one-off payment to buy an App (noting I’ve probably paid hundreds over the years to OS on subscriptions) so what options are out there please (that work)?

in the scheme of things – especially how much it costs to build and mantain  web and mobile apps, this is almost nothing. It’s less than a coffee per month. I personally get way more than £2.50’s worth of utility out of it.

Yeah, I’m with dakuan on this, I’m ok with under £2.50 a month for something i use pretty much every ride or hike i do.

It always seems to be half price around Black Friday anyway so I’ll carry renewing my sub when the deals come around.

Backcountry navigator works well and has offline OS maps. Fatmap also does if you have a strava account (it’s included).

I use memory maps (MMFA is the app). I paid a one-off fee to get all of the OS maps on there. I can’t remember exactly how much it was, but it was a good enough deal that I ditched my OS subscription.

It also allows you to download the entire UK in 1:50k in one go – rather than piecemeal like with the OS app.

The problem I have with the OS app is that even though I have about 40 maps on there, it just doesn’t seem to work as well as the paid  subscription that my wife has.

That’s what I’m seeing too. It’s certainly jumped up in price over the years. At £34.99 I’ll likely renew again later this year. The Strava option would be tempting but I get all my “fitness” metrics through Garmin/intervals and I’m not interested in the KOM thing.

I use it a minimum weekly. Mainly just to dream up routes I’d like to do, or plan a new dog walk. I could use the paper maps I’ve got, but the app is helpful and is there when I do a bridleway bimble. I don’t mind paying it. I give more money to Singletrack a year for disparate use of this forum.

Started using Memory Map since towzer’s PSA on the bargains thread[/url] – can have app and maps on 5 different devices. The way the app tracks and plots your route (and is editable/exportable) is excellent. Sometimes I wish for a zoom in, but I think that’s just because I’ve got used to how bing maps work online. Always used Landranger and they work great on phone and ipad.

Not the best time of year for this, but the OS Maps subscription often has a half price (or greatly reduced) Black Friday deal. It says for new customers only but I bought and activated it when I still had a month left on my current one and it just added the 12 months to the end like a normal renewal

£34.99 would have had me looking at other options – e.g. a perpetual license for OS 1:50k and 1:25k is currently £99 at Memory Map, less than three years OS sub. But I checked with OS, and:

What are the new prices for monthly & annual subscriptions?

For monthly subscriptions, all existing and new customers will move to a £6.99 per month price plan.

For annual subscriptions, existing customers will pay £28.99 per year and new customers will pay £34.99 per year.

These updated prices will apply across subscriptions purchased through the OS Shop, Apple App Store & Google Play Store.

So it looks like my renewal in August should be £28.99, which I can just about live with, particularly since the perpetual license does not include updates – you get the maps as they are when you buy.

I see that the previous OS Locate function is now embedded in the OS Maps with the latest Android release. I guess the same for Apple phones?

My renewal failed as I’ve a new bank card, so as I try to renew (which doesn’t seem to be possible as I can’t find a renewal as my account has essentially expired), it is £35.
I just don’t use it often enough to justify that…it isn’t even fortnightly.
I do like it though but the cost just puts me off. Having looked at a few others, I’m not sure they are what I’m after as I’m not needing it to track.
I’ll have a chat with my partner, if she was likely to use it as well, then it would be that price for both of us and in my head that means I’m only paying 17.50 for me (and the same for her – I’m sure she is worth that amount!).

Isn’t there always a discount for new subscribers anyway. Certainly seems that way.

I haven’t found it if there is…all the codes I’ve found don’t work with os maps.

Hmmmm I’ve had OS maps for 5 years – it was £17.95 and the last few years it has been £19.99.

So now nearly a 50% hike?  Seems a bit excessive.

For the past 3 years I’ve paid £23.99. Prior to that, £19.99

But that was when it last renewed (Oct 2023) – gawd knows what price it will be come this October 🤣

Strava subscriber (although was debating going back to basic this year) but combination of strava features and OS maps means that is prob the right option for me.

Yeah, I seem to recall that’s why it jumped a little in price for me before.  I’ve just tried to check my card details but seems it’s not possible to view the details or update 🤔

I let my sub lapse as I don’t like new home page, routes, activities etc. A bunch of functionality I find annoying and don’t have much use for, like they’re trying to social media  it or something when all I want is the, er, map and an arrow to show where I am. Also annoying it costs about twice its french and spanish equivalents. Cut to last saturday morning when I came close to renewing at £35 (hurrying out the door and finding just gone past the run out date), before 5 mins of research and downloading MemoryMaps, which at just under £20 does the job (and zooms okay for me though you need to choose your scale).

It’s not so much saving the price of a couple of pints, all said and done. it’s not wanting to pay for stuff I don’t use.

I have bought a subscription for the last 3 years on black Friday and paid about £15 or so. I use OS Map a lot and I think its good value for money. Eventually I will probably have to pay full price, but IMO still good value. I wasn’t too keen on the new app, but I am slowly getting use to it.

Its like a lot of things if you use it, buy it. I also use an old version of memory map which is just as good

I recently did a wee user-testing session on the OS Website and got a £15 gift voucher for my troubles. That’ll go to my next renewal.
