A friend of my wife is a thermomix rep and is coming round to demo one. It’s over 1k. I can’t see the benefit in getting another kitchen paperweight…should i be worried?

    🤔🤣

I had to look up what one actually is.

Looks quite fancy. An all in one system.

1.Will it make the wife happy ? – buy it

2.Will it become a back of cupboard dweller ? – quite possibly, but refer to No1

3 Will wife become top class chef ?- No, but refer to No1

    .

Tell me. how many wheels/bikes/sets of legs do you have ?

They’re quite popular in France. Good for soups and compotes. It’s a fancy slow cooker and blender combinee. We’ve got one as a gift from the french half of the family.

If you make a risotto with it, it not as good as preparing it properly. But, the effort is very low. Handy when you have small kids or a busy job.

They’re industrial and noisy, but they’re amazing.

    Not really a consumer item.

Gets used daily, I boil eggs with it. Lol.

Like a Corby trouser press, but for shell suit / tracky bottoms.

I googled.  It looks to be a seven hundred quid food mixer with a side order of pyramid selling.  I’m out.  No legitimate appliance requires a “rep” regardless of how good it might be.

Of course . Got my Kirby and Corby mixed up there.

At least I called it a vacuum and not a Kirby Hoover 😂

Buckle up for a six-hour hard-sell demo. She’s probably got a garage full of them and is in debt and desperate…

Either way, you’ll either end up with a 1K appliance or your wife will lose a friend.

Another +1 for them taking up quite a bit of kitchen real estate but if used to the extent of their ability are a fantastic bit of kit. Soups, stews, curries, dough, meatballs, etc. I even disagree with the risotto, it’s not exactly load and press go because to get a good risotto you need to watch and add more stock at the right times and then judge exactly when it’s done, but it’s way less faff than a pan on the stove and manual stirring. And you can load and press go and get a pretty good one if you want. There’s a reason they are in many / most pro kitchens, because they work. Is the price OTT – maybe (more later) but pro kitchens don’t tend to waste money on shit disposable equipment and ours is as new after maybe 10 years and loads of usage.

Will it become a kitchen ornament – IDK your wife, will it?

Re the selling of them – bit of a different thing there. My wife did a bit of home selling BITD for a few firms (pampered Chef, MSK) and generally enjoyed it – fitted with her interests, being at home with the kids when they were little, getting out and having some good evenings out and earned a bit of money at the same time. Of course being ‘pyramid schemes’ she never really got rich, but we never expected to and she never pushed hard to recruit others. She looked at it for the Thermomix, was about £1000 to buy at the time but cheaper if you signed up as a seller with then obligations to shift some volumes, IIRC. And we couldn’t see how that would happen, so ‘we’re out’. Makes it an odd one overall then….. didn’t like the scheme, but really rate the appliance.

    Buckle up for a six-hour hard-sell demo.

Kind of agree, but hard to sell something that cooks things without demoing it, and bringing premade stuff to shove in the microwave defeats the object.

Either way, you’ll either end up with a 1K appliance or your wife will lose a friend.

I know it’s tongue in cheek but doesn’t have to be, if you lose a friend over whether you want to buy a Thermomix you’re probably not really that good friends.

All those who had to google what it was before slagging it off, don’t know what they are talking about. Listen to people who have and use one but make your own mind up. I know you can come back and say that of course we’ll say they’re great because we don’t want to admit we’ve been rinsed; on that I’d have to say trust me. My wife and I didn’t drink the Kool Aid so have no chip in the game (air fryers better for them anyway)

They’re unbelievably popular in Oz. It’s like a cult. My wife wouldn’t dream of buying one though.

My wife had a friend like this … she got so fed up of her attempting to sell her shit constantly she stopped meeting up with her.

Mate in  Paris with a French wife, they have one and it gets used a lot, but not by him, he says it takes the joy and fun out of cooking, it’s sort of like robocook, but to be fair we’ve had some lovely meals from it.

Maybe, but after you’ve chucked the first glass of white wine in at the start, the pleasure you get from polishing off the rest of the bottle while listening to a bit of music in the kitchen, with nothing more taxing than a bit of stirring…

    Haha,

I wonder how many households work like this…

Wife asking husband how much bike part cost: Oh that tiny XX1 mech, errr, about £30.

Husband asking how much that new blender cost, errr about £100.

    😂

But I like that part of cooking.

Will this gadget calm me down after a stressful day at work in the same way as cooking a nice dinner from scratch does?

Not saying others shouldn’t buy this or any other kitchen gizmo, but personally I enjoy the process of cooking.

Sister has one and loves it. You need to think about it differently – if your wife buys one of these, you now have an excuse for another bike 🙂

I googled.  It looks to be a seven hundred quid food mixer with a side order of pyramid selling.  I’m out.  No legitimate appliance requires a “rep” regardless of how good it might be.

It’s simply because it’s a direct sales model – i.e they can’t store them at Currys as they’re just too expensive to box shift. They need in-home demos so you can really see the value. It’s not really pyramid selling either as you don’t create more sellers below you – each rep has an area. It’s just single level marketing.

Many chef’s kitchen will have them – a high quality item which can do consumer, at a price!

But there is nothing suspect about them.

They work well as an assist when you’re doing other stuff – so you can make sauces while you’re taking care of the main event.  Home made granola, soups, slaw, Béarnaise  – that sort of thing. Extremely reliable and robust.

Has very little in common with a cheap blender.  Popular in hot countries too where you don’t want to add even more heat to an environment.

I’ve watched with cynicism but enjoyed watching my partner using it for years.

Currys sell plenty of things that cost this much. But of course this thing shouldn’t cost so much, and isn’t going to shift without the hard sell.

We have a soup maker… heats things, cuts things, blends things… £40.

Of course, you can get yours free if you agree to sell on to your friends and contacts… your “advisor” can hit you up for some of that action… but it’s not a pyramid scheme.

Quite a small area, I’d guess, seeing as I know of two sellers within a few miles of where I’m sitting now?

Done many a job/presentation for Vorwerk, Thermomix parent company.

but not by him, he says it takes the joy and fun out of cooking,

This is kinda what the people presenting it said… They’re for people who don’t like nor have the time for cooking.

We have one and use it all the time, it’s excellent. Makes risottos, chicken pasta dishes, stews, curries, yoghurt and a range of other things. The impressive thing about it is the way in which it prompts you for each ingredient, weighs them, chops them and then cooks for the correct amount of time, including stirring. When I use it, I like that I can go and do something else for 10 mins while it does the stirring.

Whoever said £700, that’s wrong they’re £1200. There’s a reason chefs use them though, huge time saver on the right recipe.

Got one 4 years ago and love it. If Mrs Ernie left me and took the thermy, I’d buy a new one. We use it almost daily, cooking anything from chicken and mushroom balti, coleslaw, bunt cakes, chocolate caramel shortcake, casseroles, soups, the options just go on. The on line menu makes finding new recipes very easy and has the ability to create a shopping list (and you can export to your online grocery order).

Having been sceptical when I was told we were getting one, I am a convert.

Maybe. Not in our area. Probably depends on how affluent it is.
