Does anybody know of a device that my son could have which just plays music, he has Spotify playlists and a kindle fire tablet but we don’t want him using the tablet as he’ll end up on games etc. He’s 7 and won’t have a phone for a good while yet. Just need something like  iPods use to be,  that only plays music/ Spotify.  Cheers

We got one of my kids what Currys called a boombox when they were about 8. One of these:

Plays CDs, MP3s ona CD or stick or via Bluetooth. Might be slightly old school formats but gives some adult oversight and as it works as a Bluetooth speaker is sort of future proof when they eventually get phones, laptops, etc

plenty of devices around, but how about just a cheap echo speaker? can be linked to spotify – it does have access to other “skills” and you can ask it info, but all (ime) pretty harmless for a kid.

otherwise, mighty can play spotify offline, but without the screen I don’t know what the experience is like :

We’ve just got a Yoto for our 3 year old. You can make playlists in the app from any music you (cough) legally own and either send them from your phone or attach them to a card that they put in the player itself. Incredibly user friendly and faff-free*.

*apart from the faff of setting up the playlists

We bought a portable CD player/Boombox for our then 7 year old (she’s now 10).

She loves digging through all our old CDs, she buys her own CDs for 50p/£1 in charity shops, I burn her the occasional mix cd.

She’s discovered a lot of music that she probably wouldn’t have found on Spotify, etc. and she’s definitely got a more eclectic and interesting taste in music now compared to a lot of her peers.

I also like the physicality of it, she has to choose to listen to things rather than being a passive listener, just following the algorithm’s suggestions.

There are a number of manufacturers making Walkman-style cassette players, and Technics make a twin-deck cassette player/recorder with dubbing, plus you can actually buy blank cassette tapes. Quite the thing wit’ da yoot, apparently. Real mix tapes, with all the added fun of working out which is the track they can fit into the last 1’ 48” available on side 2.
