Laccy band original mounts for the road bikes, and a stem spacer mount for the MTB – puts the garmin just above the centre of the bars.

Bump on this old thread. Just replaced my 130 (did a battery replacement which has failed after a month – I’m guessing soldered wires maybe broke but I’d siliconed the front back on so it was a one time repair).

New 530 is really impressive – there are a lot of nice new features though main attraction was the battery life.

however, it looks a lot bigger and more vulnerable on the Garmin mtb mount in front of the bars. with the 130 that felt safe to me – it’s generally a well protected area and dont’ hit with your kneed in an OTB or side fall, and in a frontal knock I’d got it loose enough that the mount rotated up or down on it’s hinge. The 530 is a bit too big for that to work.

I think anything above the stem is too vulnerable.

My 530 is mounted using the Garmin MTB mount. That places it over the stem/topcap and I’ve yet to hit it.

On the top tube where it’s out of harms way.

I don’t like the top tube mount at all.

Sweat drops straight onto it for a start.
It is much harder to read on the fly because of the angle you have to tilt your head.

Also when I tried it I knocked a Wahoo off with my knees on a tight turn. Hiking back up a DH track looking for it was not fun. Fortunately it wasn’t broken.

I think it depends on your setup,

I’ve done various things.  steerer top cap too high and gets knocked frequently.

whether a stem spacer or reversed ‘out front’ mount works depends on your stem length and design – it ends up too high and vulnerable with a lot of stems.

Garmin mtb mounted in front of the bars and ‘not too tight’ is current favourite.  protected from most things and if you do manage to hit it on something then it moves out of the way rather than breaking.
