...as some would have you believe. IMO obviously 🙂

Finished this afternoon. Mostly from the spares box (rolling chassis, bars and levers). Rest from classifieds (thanks chaps) and new cable disk brakes for £20 each from On-One. Lots of modulation in those brakes and probably enough power....will find out on it's maiden voyage tonight. Weighs in at about 22lbs and that's with those brakes weighing a pound of that. Rohloff tensioner I had lying around looks a bit cumbersome but loads of spring on it. Only thing Im missing is some freehub spacers. using cut drain pipe at the moment.

So nice to have the scandal frame built up again. One of the originals (with proper scandium in the alloy) and if Im honest rides better than my Ti29er 😳

Is that a "just walked in on the FHM Magazine babe's photoshoot while they all change into their swimming costume" kind of speechless or a "just walked in on Edwina Curry changing into her swimming costume" kind of speechless?

D'ya know I'm actually torn when you put it like that - the 'stealth black and silver' detailing falls into the former category..... but overall it's the latter (none taken... 😉

that looks pretty nice actually, not sure about the stem tbh but if it puts you in the right place I suppose its irrelevant.

Is it monstercross? It's a nichewh0re-barred mtb by my reckoning...

So "monstercross" is just a 29er with a set of weird bars on it?

monstercross = drop barred 29er

so yes, that there's is a bona fide monstercross. Called Edwina.

http://twentynineinches.com/2009/01/09/monstercross-defined/

1: It is generally accepted that “monstercross” is based upon 700c wheels.
2: It is generally accepted that “monstercross” is fully rigid- no suspension.
3: It is generally accepted that “monstercross” utilizes drop bars.
4: It is generally accepted that “monstercross” means larger tires will clear the frame. (40mm- ??)

I thought Monster cross was a cross bike (with drop bars) with a big 29er tyre up front. Surely that's a standard 29er spoilt with drops?

rear wheel: valve / logo fail

mea culpa.

I put the tyre on, inserted the tube and noticed my error. But was too lazy to take the inner out again and the tyre wouldnt slide round. If it werent for you pesky kids, I wouldnt have to think about these things...

In terms of geometry, even with the 35deg 80mm stem, the hand placing in the drops is 110mm lower than on my riser-barred 29er.

Reach is longer by a smidge too, but I think thats down to the TT difference between the 21" Scandal and the 19.5" Ti29er.

Are they the 29er Carbon OO forks or the 26er?

The world would be a dull place if we all liked the same things.

But I wouldn't want to live in a world where we all lusted after Edwina Curry.

29" mango.

They're usually on the Ti29er, but Ive moved that back over to 80mm reba maxles and since they, and the frame and my spare wheels were sitting idle....

it's a pity they miss off the important bit of mechanical disc brakes and Dia Compe 287 levers in that deal to work with the midges.

Theyve got a few of the shimano M495 callipers left at £20 each (they call them front only, but they can be used on rear with the right IS to Post mount (+20mm)). They also have some BB5s at £30 and BB7s at £40. And the 297s are £25 a pair. So additional budget of £80-100ish

Well that was fun!

+ awesome, truly f*****g awesome, climbing!
+ nice on the roads

- long reach means locking elbows means ragged on descents.
- bit of a spasm in left hand in the drops.

so it's not a WIN, but it's amusing. will ride more and tweak if necc.

I hate tensioners, and the bars are awful. Apart from that, I like it.

On-One carbon 29er forks.

I hate tensioners. The rohloff one, despite being as tight as a banjo string still gives me chainslap, so going to have a go at the surly-esque one in the spares box.

I guess my only alternative is an ENO hub 🙁

bars look a little low to me but if you are happy you are happy.
I've got those bars on my monstercross with an aber hallo stem and slr levers and travel agents and v brakes and alfine and...........
Yes monstercossers are a little quirky to behold but are fun to ride.

A rotor (non round) ring allows me to run my vert drop frame SS sans tensioner.
Miketually - buy some proper bars and that's a bargain.

surely that changes the effective chain length over each revolution so for some of the stroke the chain is in tension for the rest it's floppy?
