I've never succeeded in removing a hub cartridge bearing.

Can anyone give me a simple guide as to what I should try?

Currently I'm trying to replace the bearings on my commuter's wheels. I've removed the (solid) axles, and the bearings have come out of the hub (intact) on the (threaded things?) on the axles.

I've tried (but failed) to knock then off the axle with a hammer and screwdriver. I've not applied maximum force since I can't risk breaking anything but not removing the bearings, since I've only this one pair of wheels.

Would a cheap tool from Amazon help me?

I've also recently had bearings stuck inside the hub; and bearings stuck on a Forward Components EBB. Both these went to the LBS.

drill hole through a block of wood the diameter of the axle.

drop axle through hole so that bearing rests on the top of wood block and make sure there's nothing stopping axle going all the way through the wood.

place another block of wood over end of axle and bash it with a hammer.

if you have a bearing at each end clamp a piece of wood either side of the axle and then hit the axle to to get the first bearing off then turn over and repeat.

Block of wood with a hole in it slightly bigger than the axle diameter

Drop the axle into it [making sure there's clear air underneath] so that the bearing sits on the wood
whack the top of the axle with a soft faced mallet, catch the falling axle

EDIT - that's just taking spooky to another level WW ๐Ÿ™‚
