Mondraker sizing and Forward Geometry (30mm stem)

Any experience or thoughts on it in its current form?

30mm stem. Frame reach 465-470mm on mediums, 490-495 on large. So not really longer bar reach than other long bikes, just that it’s made up of longer frame and shorter stem.

I’ve read the stuff about effective stem length and twitchier steering.

How are you liking the steering feel? Anyone sized down and put a longer stem on, either for sizing or steering feel preference?

Or other bikes you’ve tried super short stems on? I believe 32mm is the minimum possible for a 35mm clamp.

I think I’m on a medium foxy. I had a 10mm stem on then swapped it to a 30mm stem. The 30 pulled me forward and down a bit. It also looks more normally.

I can’t remember if it was any twitchier.

I’ve got a Mondraker Craft in M so 470 reach with a 30mm stem – it feels long as hell. Especially when I jump on another bike, which is weird because my Transition Scout is 460mm and has a 42.5mm stem so reach should be the same if not a tiny bit longer. (For what it’s worth, I tried a 30mm stem on the Transition and didn’t like how it changed the handling)

I sometimes wish I’d sized down just because the Mondy is a huge a bike all in all, but once I’m on it and riding it all just fits – definitely don’t have twitchy steering.

I’ve had a couple of Mondys. You have to think more about how you ride them, tbh. I kept forgetting and wondered why my newest one felt so dead. I slid the saddle right forwards which forced me to be right forwards and it absolutely came alive. Worth trying that first!

I think it must have been less twitchy. With a 10mm, the effective stem length from where your hands lie would be negative (behind the steerer) due to the handlebar backsweep.

How tall are you? I’m 5ft 8 and my bike is the same reach and stem as your Scout.

Interesting. Crafty is 65.5 head angle, Scout 64. Steeper and shorter stem should both make it twitchier.

I had a Large 650b Dune with a 495mm reach for a couple of years and I’m only 5’7″ . It was overall too big for me  but was made  manageable by how the fork offset and short stem made the  steering tighter and easier.It was a very stable bike for me and taught me that I’d always bought bikes that were too short for me  in the past.

I had fun on it-it was great bike on the steeper stuff  where  before I had struggled with  this on shorter bikes but it was hard work for me elevating the front end…….so I sold it.

I’m 5’7″ – I don’t know if the fact that the Crafty is an ebike is what makes it feel more planted.

What I do find about the foxy is that it’ll plough through stuff and I’m pretty much a passenger holding on. At the top I can feel it pushing my fingers off the brakes. It wants to go fast. I hold it back.
