My 4.5yr old loves using the weeride, but I think I'm getting to the stage I can't wedge him in it anymore.

I've looked at several top tube options, but most seem to be quite a lot of money, and most say for up to his age.

I'm wondering about keeping the main support bar and mocking up a saddle clamping thingy to use with a childs saddle and bolting it to the support. He can then hold onto the bars, which he does already.

Anyone tried this?

Are you not describing a macride?

Yep, the next step on from a Wee-ride is a Macride, its exactly like you describe, a saddle rather than a 'seat'.

well yes. but no. instead of paying £120 for something that might not last him long, I'm wondering if anyone has modified their weeride, which I already have.

But you'll get the majority of that back when you sell it. Or you can spend a load of money bridging something which will be worth squat when you're done.

At 4.5 I'd have thought you were growing out of the Macride too. Hoppy jr was on a tag along at that stage.

Important part of the macride etc is the feet supports. How are you going to do that if you modify your weeride?

When our eldest outgrew the weeride (@4 ish) she was reluctant to use the tyke totter we bought to replace it. I ended up removing the stirrups from the weeride and using the footpegs from the tyre totter.

Only got 6 more months out if it, moved on to the tyke totter properly but by then she'd almost outgrown that too.

In my opinion, 4.5 to 5 is too old/big for a bike seat and you're into copilot territory. That or walking. For the last 8ish months I've been pushing the bike with eldest standing on the nds pedal, works well but it's a short walk home for us...

I’m using one of these, been great so far and cost under £40 and meant to be good up to 6 years old

What bike you using that on?

I saw A Shotgun bike seat the other day which specifically says fits all "adult mtb's. "

I'd be after something to use with my transition scout

The Macride is great. The footpegs are pretty important. It is pricey though, I think the two things that will limit you in using it (or a homebrew version) are:

-height of your child, particularly if the bike has fairly low standover (my 5yo is on the limit on one bike, but fine on another)

-weight of your child (I think the limit is 25kg.)
