I’m seeing more and more of this, most recently a gas van with something like “Can you smell gas? call 0800 999 999” or similar, in mirror writing, on the hood. Surely the effectiveness of this message would be far greater if it was in normal writing? Surely mirror writing is aimed at people viewing it in their rear-view mirror? In which case I should think they have bigger problems to deal with if they can smell gas in their car.

I can understand why an emergency services vehicle would have mirror writing on the hood, but any other vehicle? Can anyone explain the point?

Because it attracts attention, like some bike shops used to have their adverts upside down, to get attention, and like your poor spelin it getts attentions.
