I have the chance to 'aquire' a V plate GT. I was called to look at it and it seems pretty sound. However it has a Webasto roof. The bar at the back of the Webasto is definately rusty (you can feel the loose stuff under the vinyl)and there is rust in the roof panel at the Webasto corners. Obviously I didn't want to strip his car apart ther and then, and I've no experience of Webasto roofs.
What the likely scenario under that vinyl?
I can weld and spray and have done many restorations, but I don't want to get bogged down in another one.

do you really want a webasto roof?
just plated over the one on the farm range rover when it went crappy, could probably do a tidier job on that as easier to weld?

More of a case of do I want to spend time and money on a Webasto when the car is free. I know what a money pit 'classic' cars can be.

From my experience, you will possibly need to weld the corners of the roof, but certainly the steel bar at the back of the sunroof is rotten and that it what you are feeling. The roof with need to be taken apart and rebuilt to do it, the vinyl may not be good after this, especially around the rusted back bar.

Are you sure it's a Webasto? As there smallest roof is a bit big for an MGB GT, the majority if not all that I've seen are Britax – again expensive to replace, new if you can get them 1000 min (last time I tried not available). A specialist trimmer should be able to restore though, or a second hand item. 'Richardsons' have been breaking MG's for decades, google them or get hold of an MG magazine for their details.

Ah right I just assumed it was a Webasto. The vinyl is sound as is the car in general. Just those two corners where the Webasto is rivited to the roof are of some concern.

I had a 78 GT in orange with wire spoke wheels- looked ok from the outside but internal structure had vanished with rust – my advice – get it and buy some shares in Corus Steel

I have an MGB GT 1972, I use it every day and have done for 5 months. Parts are cheap and you can fix it all yourself.

My advice from someone who has done it and still uses it is go for it.

So much fun to drive and a lot better then the box cars. There are loads of people to help I have the names and numbers of quite a few.

If you want a list of things to check out just send me a mail, or I will stick it up on here.

This is mine, she's called Penelope.

I've done a lot of work to her and the stupid fibre glass splitter has gone.

The last classic I restored was a 72 GT, Damask red & Rostyles.
I giggled at that last bit because I turned my nose up at the spoiler as the pics appeared.

Wow sounds good! That thing had to be the first bit to go. I coated the bottom in old engine oil the other day. Horrible job!

Fancy giving me a free respray and rust removal? 😀
