So, my missus spent a fair bit of money on what was being sold as an original 1975 Japan release of Jaws. As soon as it came out of the tube I thought it looked too white to be genuine. Further digging shows A) it is suspiciously white B) it’s glossy on both sides which lots of sites say is a red flag C) the main image is cropped in line with identified fakes that were printed in the 80s.

The vendor has come back saying all Japanese B2 posters are glossy, which goes against what I’ve found on the net. Is anyone on STW an expert on this that can lend any expertise to help clarify? Appreciate it’s unlikely but thought I’d ask as the hive mind hasn’t let me down yet!

    Is that a vampire Beckinsale?

    It’s more Jaws-y.

    Nope it’s not a vampire.

I can’t speak for Japanese movie posters, but back in the 60’s, posters sent out to British cinemas were folded, not rolled. Modern ones seem to be sent out rolled, I’ve not noticed crease-marks on the ones I see on display at my local cinema.
Somewhere I’ve got several I got from that same cinema, I was allowed to sort through a pile in a cupboard and take any I fancied for 50p each. Wouldn’t happen now!
I’ve got posters for ‘The Man Who Fell To Earth’, with Bowie, LED Zeppelin ‘The Song Remains The Same’, and ‘La Vallee’, music by Pink Floyd. I wish I’d grasped ‘Clockwork Orange’ and ‘2001 aSpace Odyssey’ while I had free access to that treasure trove.
Another thing just occurred to me – I doubt very much that in 1975 posters were printed on International B-size paper, the most common sizes are One-Sheet, 27”x40”, or Bus Stop, 60”x40”

If you aren’t happy with the poster and aren’t sure about the authenticity.. return the poster

It does not sound right. However, if you like it put it on the wall.

I got a few movie posters from 00’s and they all came in rolls from a local cinema, did a swap for a PC. Bet that computer no longer exists :).

I also have a couple of vintage computer game poster, just put this one on the wall (framed) in the den/study.

Can you get a close up picture/scan of the dots that make up the print on the poster? (Halftone). Back in the 1970s there was pretty much only one way of printing and the halftone definition back then wouldn’t be as sharp as it is now – it would all have been done with cameras in darkrooms.

Oh. The game posters is a Pandora’s box. Loved Afterburner…

Good shout on the print, I’ll investigate that tonight.

Reading this it sounds like yours is a fake 🙁. If as you say you payed good money for it I’d definitely try and get a refund.

    BEWARE OF FAKE MOVIE POSTERS!!
