A phaser, Shirley?
"set to stun"

Light sabre
Flak Cannon from Unreal
Needle gun from Halo
and the BFG!
Does ED209 count from Robocop?
Rouge troopers rifle (which was embedded with the brain of his dead friend).
I always remember one in an early Judge Dredd story where they were at war against the soviet mega city. The soviets had these range finding weapons that could shoot through walls. Dredd realised that if he could run towards them fast enough then they could not change the range quickly enough....the result was obviously not good for Sergei and his comrades.
Didn't sam slade have a cool gun too?
[PS given the prominence of this forum on Google search rankings, I half expect my miscreant colleagues to find this....message: Back off these are my finds, go write some SQL or whatever you techs do on a wednesday evening 😉 ]

He was blue, not red! Besides, they messed up with Gunnar slightly by calling him Gunnar. (and IIRC the helmet was Helm, and the bag was Mr GI Who Will Soon Be Dead And Turned Into A Bag) Friday's gun Eightball was cooler
Kanedas' laser rifle in Akira (with the motorbike of course)
Failing that, the Gun Carriage from "Against a dark background" or a decent knife missile 8)
Offside! What self respecting knife missile would allow itself to be handled by a big sack of meat? How about the pistol from A Gift From The Culture?
Moh Kohn's smartgun in The Star Fraction was very nearly excellent, but took a bit of a back seat too early in the story. Ah well.
Inoring the lightsaber, I do like the pistol carried by Ronon Dex in Stargate Atlantis. I don't think it's ever named but it's pretty cool. It's not really a weapon as such, but I would like a sonic screwdriver too.
apart from the lightsaber and aliens pulse rifle with flamethrower strapped on 😀
although it doesn't come from a film this is awesome (in a sick kind of way 😮
there was also a fantastic weapon from the first turok game (it looked like a long blue crystal and when you fired it,it set off a nuclear explosion that wiped out all enemies on screen (it was awesome 😀
edit here it is
just awesome fun 😀

Zorg ZF-1
oh and if we're getting proper geeky, the harlequins kiss monofilament close combat weapon to liquidise an enemy in their armour or shuriken cannons used by eldar death jesters, in warhammer 40k
Well on the WH40K front I was always partial to the space marines chainsaw weapon, though the orks were always more satisfying to paint.
vera?
geek alert- theres a firefly reunion panel at comic-con this year , maybe have an announcement......?
Can you name them all?

the muzzle flame from the custom compensator looks really cool!
For sheer coolness I have to +1 this one.
Also quite like this for old-fashioned bloody-mindedness in a hight tech future.
Others that spring to mind.
And when I was a kid I could ignore the pure shiteness of this film because I wanted a Glaive.
slainte 😳 rob
Does anyone remember Runaway from 1984? bullets that go round corners!
(And RC-car bomb things)
good call horatio that gun in runaway was ace
Does anyone remember Runaway from 1984? bullets that go round corners!
yep, great film (in it's time)!
Stormtrooper Blaster
Did that ever actually hit anything?
portlyone and pleaderwilliams stole my ideas, the revolver from Firefly and the impulse guns from Eraser are sick.
Even though it's only fired twice, the sniper rifle from District 9..
Although not sure if it counts as hand held, looks to be about two meters long and like it could take out a tank.
Both the sword and the pistol that Babydoll used in Sucker Punch. Awesome combo (if that counts as sci-fi).
Rorschach's grappling gun was pretty cool in Watchmen.
As are the Desert Eagles used by the Agents in the Matrix (although again, not particularly sci-fi).
And the gravity hammer from Halo. So OTT it's just got to be awesome.
There is only one weapon to be considered here.
The Point of View Gun.
...the gun was created by Deep Thought prior to its long pondering of the Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything. When used on someone, it will cause them to see things from the point of view of the person firing the gun (the Guide says that it "conveniently, does precisely as its name suggests"). According to the Guide, though the gun was designed by Deep Thought, it was commissioned by the Intergalactic Consortium of Angry Housewives(/stwers), who were tired of ending every argument with their husbands with the phrase: "You just don't get it, do you?"
Shoot me Zooey.

Lazygun from 'Look To Windward' by Iain M Banks
[geek mode]Of course you mean Lazygun from 'Against a dark background' by Iain M Banks[/geek mode]
Not the most predictable of weapons but if you need to destroy a planet...
Well, I think kingdom of the crystal skull took Indiana Jones into sci-fi so I'm going to say the bull whip. Not as sophisticated or effective as a light sabre but cool as a polar bears dangly bits.
terrible film, but I really do fancy one of those 'sick sticks' from Minority Report. No need for death and destruction when you can just turn your enemy into a puke machine instantaneously.
saddos 😉
Lightsaber, swords beat guns everytime
where's that 2nd one from cougar? (even by sf/rpg standards it looks a bit silly)
stormtrooper blaster is useless, accuracy is pish.
did GoW pinch the chainsaw bayonet of WH? (don't know anything about WH)
Metal Storm from the Axis of Time trilogy. Has the disadvantage of being real.
Guns and sabres 🙄 .
All you need is one of these

Just tell them they can fly, and hope they aren't wearing sunglasses.
