I find im in need of a welder, due to a job ive been putting off for some 5 years. Has anyone got, borrowed or used the parkside flux core welding machine ?
Only £80, well within this Scotsman's canny budget, and of the review Ive seen it looks ok, but anyone here given such thing a go and how did you get on

Ta 🙂

How many blokes around the country are going to return home from getting some milk/bread/wine to the echoes of 'for gods sake! What the hell have you bought now?' 😀

...Checks lidl.se.

Damn, no welders, but they do have cheap solar LED lights. I reckon I could slip a couple of those into the new greenhouse without my GF noticing. That would really cheer her up.

Could you weld a bike frame with that welder? Would you?!

What sort of job are you doing?
How thick is the object to be welded?
is it Steel?

An £80 gasless MIG welder won't be upto welding much above 1-2mm thick Steel plate.

It will also need a rest (to allow the internal bits to cool) if the weld is over 4-6 inches in length :o)

Flux core welders are pretty carp to be honest. Well, they weld stuff together but they're pretty messy usually.

I had a Sealey Mighty Mig, so a relatively known brand. It was pretty limiting in what it could do and far from pretty.

I upgraded a couple of years back to a Clarke 375 or something, which uses a small argon mix bottle.

The weld quality is so much better.

I believe you can actually use flux core wire in it too should you want to.
Gas is better though fo sho.

What do you want to do with it?

I generally dont like flux mig (much prefer using shielding gas, so much cleaner and can see easier), but for some jobs its ideal (welding a gate out side in the wind etc).

25-120A so should do 2.5mm steel, maybe 3 if you V the joint. Not much use on thin stuff, good for blowing holes in car wings.

I've got one, which I bought after going in for milk and bread.

For a welder it's okay at best, and only really of use for occasional crude jobs like gate repairs or some basic box section joining. And is quite messy (grinder and paint make me the welder I ain't...)

It's utterly crap at thick and thin stuff, 1.5mm minimum really.

The wire that came with it was rubbish, but Screwfix sell some flux core stuff which was better. But store it in a sealed tub indoors.

I bought it for a specific job and it paid for itself, and has come in handy a few times since. Go in with your eyes wide open as to its limits and capabilities and it's not bad for the price.

Wouldn't recommend if you were doing any serious or proper welding.

Steel yes
Attaching a nut onto a metal frame as an anchor point. Point was originally in the wrong place due to poor manufacture, im making good.

Chap in the vid i watched welded 2 pieces of square together. Looked to know what he was about and the thickness on the steel was more like 5mm maybe more. But either way for what i need - repositioned nut onto frame, it looks more than adequate.

Vid i watched.

He has a second vid(5 questions/5 answers) which shows him doing a weld that looks as good as an amateur like me can hope for.
I've welded arc and a bit of brazing.
