    Glenlivet

A rickety wooden bridge close to the site of the battle of Glenlivet in 1594. I had assumed this was a wee skirmish following a night on the bevvy and the Earl of Huntly made a pass at the Earl of Argyll’s Mrs. Turns out Huntly’s 2,000 troops managed to thrash Argyll’s 10,000, despite being hugely outnumbered and fighting uphill – much to the chagrin of King James.

I thought about this thread the other day. I went for a ride to meet my eldest son, who was on his way home, cycling back from Bath to Cambridge. He puts me to shame – he and his wife sold their car and now go everywhere by bike or train.

This was the bridge under the A1 at Biggleswade – who knew that such a sweet route existed?

Me and my new bridge at Cocksburn Reservoir.

A few years ago SPEN (Scottish Power Energy Networks, the pylon people) destroyed the local hill path as mitigation work, and at Cocksburn Reservoir built a new path and a bridge that wasn’t really needed.

The bridge lasted just a few months before it washed away into the reservoir. SPEN then lied to me and said it wasn’t their responsibility, but it was so I named and shamed in a national paper and they finally agreed to replace it.

This is the replacement bridge – the multi-use path around the reservoir is fully connected again and hopefully this new bridge will last years rather than months.
(There’s a Stanton Sherpa in the grass at the back of the bridge)
