I love that plinky plonky guitar sound that African music has.

Love this CD. Very ‘sanitised’ for the European market, but excellent on in the background.

Not much plinkiness, but possibly one of my favourite collabs.

    Something a bit more modern

I know she is not everyone’s cup of tea but I enjoyed some of the ‘Total World Tour ‘series of videos Joss Stone did about 5 years ago where she visited local musicians in Africa and other parts of the world. There were some interesting collaborations with her learning the parts in the native language. some real plinky guitar here

    BillMc’s recommendation is spot on.

    Nice one.

We do have Kanda Bongo Man on our shop playlist and it always gets the little kids wiggling their bums!

Many a relaxed evening in student digs listening to Baka Beyond before a visit to the 24 hour garage across the road 😉

I love African music, particularly from Mali and Senegal. It was only decades later that whilst I knew I had African heritage did I find through a DNA test that it was from Mali and Senegal.

    Here’s some Rokia Traore:

Zippy, I was hitch hiking around southern Africa (SA, Botswana, Zim) in 1983 and I recorded that off the radio. Took me about 10 yrs to find out who it was. Kenyan Benga, SA mbaqanga also worth checking out. On that trip I saw Hugh Masakela twice in Gaborone and Thomas Mapfumo (he’d played with Marley at the independence celebrations) in Harare.  Great stuff.

True story. I’m teaching at Wandsworth School for Boys, c 1984, it was rough as. We get called to ‘assembly’ at lunchtime with our tutor groups. I thought there’d been a murder. Anyway, we sat down and out on the stage comes Ali Faca Toure, and plays. Blimey O’Reilly, the most spine chillling amazing music.

    This is driving me crackers.

I used to have a tape of music very similar to soukous – zim zam or something like that but I cannot find either the tape or any reference online – anyone any clues?
