Progress is slow on my garage to man cave conversion, taken me 6 months to paint the walls, install sockets and insulation. I picked up 2 6ft LAP LED Battens from Screwfix for lighting, opened them up last night and have some questions hopefully the hive mind can help with because the internet could not or I didnt understand it…

The units don’t require an earth because they are double insulated (the internet says), I believe I need to run an earth as the fused spur box is metal, the light switch I have picked up is plastic so doesn’t have an earth terminal. I was going to use terminal blocks to connect the earths in and out of the light switch but then can I terminate the earth in a terminal block closer to the light? or if I cant, where can I terminate it?

The other question is specific to these LED Battens, they dont have a rear centre entrance, instead you can enter from either side using built in pinch style clips/terminals. I am looking to run my lights on a radial with one socket so planned to run the cables onto the next light out of the first, do I need the cables in at one end and then out of the other, or can I get away with putting both sets of cables in the pinch style clips/terminals?

I ran mine in a way that might answer both issues. I put a lighting junction box next to each light. Ran the radial in and out of that, including the earth, then connected to the light with a short bit of 2 core flex. Best to get the earth as near as possible IMO just in case you want to change lights at some point.

Thanks Nickjb, I’ll pick up 2 light junction boxes later.

To check my understanding, you ran two 2 and earth cables into the first light junction box, then a single piece of 2 core to the first light, then ran a piece of 2 and earth from the first junction box to the second junction box with a single piece of 2 core then going to the last light?

My led battens already had 2-core attached, but essentially my approach was same as nickjb, run twin core and earth (T&E) to a junction box, with short stretch of 2-core to light. T&E continues to next junction box for another short stretch of 2-core.

I have more lights, but basically each junction box has twin and earth in, twin and earth out to the next box (except for the last one) then a single piece of two core flex to the light. So one junction box next to each light

Thanks for the info both, have ordered some boxes and 2 core flex and will fingers crossed have an easy install later today!
