Can one actually read a book on a Kindle fire HD/HDX without their eyes turning to mush…

Quite like the idea of an ereader.. but would be good to be able to surf the web…

Got a 29 quid Nook and rooted it.. but its not really up to the job of surfing IMO

I assume they have brightness/contrast controls and the reader software usually allows you to change fonts/colours etc. Sure you’d get it readable.

Download Moon Reader app from the Play store – you can fully customise brightness, colours, etc. Way better than the standard kindle app.

Lux is a pretty good brightness control ap. Although think e-readers are much better than back lit tablets for reading

Late reply, but I now do a lot of reading on my Nexus 10 tablet, having used a Sony ereader before but wanting a bigger screen.

I use a cover-up anti-glare screen cover which does a lot to make the screen look a lot like a color ereader – nice matt surface and little/no reflection. Maybe they do something similar for the Kindle Fire, this is the one I have:

I also use an app named Mantano Reader which has an inversion mode for reading at night, i.e white text on a black background.

Lastly I use Screen Dimmer to dim the screen still further when reading at night.

I wouldn’t consider going back to an ereader now – the only advantage one has for me is battery life.
