Absolutely gutted for her to be out of the Olympics due to freak garden accident. She is so lovely and really doesn’t deserve more bad luck.

I tripped over a step in the garden and managed to, somehow, dislocate my ankle; break my tibia and fibula; and rip two ligaments off the bone. What the heck,” said Archibald.

That must have been one hell of a landing, what a list of injuries.

    No way!

That is truly gutting, what an appalling run of luck for someone that always seems such a decent, intelligent woman, never mind the fact that she was a really strong gold medal prospect.

    🙁

In a niche of the sport so Olympics centric I guess that might well be that for her.

That’s one hell of a fall.

What a shame for her. That is terrible timing.

    Ouch.

I had my tib and fib broken once, I was knocked down by a bike on the footpath. Not fun.

    Ah that’s terrible luck

I was looking at Tour Divide riders the other day on Strava and one of the UK riders was riding to the start the day before the race and came off his bike after hitting some junk on the highway; later turned out he’d fractured his arm so was out of the TD… gutting

Not sure about British Cycling’s quote?!

“Our focus is now on providing Katie with the best possible support as she begins her recovery, and we know that the whole cycling community will be right behind her for every step.

Terrible news for Katie. She has had some awful luck in the last couple of years.

What a waste of training and I don’t know how she’s coping.

Heal soon, however at a guess it’s going to be a long, slow recovery.

Ah man, that really sucks. Hope she finds a way to look on the bright side, but it must be bloody hard.

Gutted for her. Seems an incredible person from all she’s achieved and been through.

I spotted the BC quote as well – deliberate? And I bet she didn’t say “what the heck”.

Blimey.  At least she didn’t go full Spinal Tap drummer, and survived to tell the tale!

My first thought was ‘Spinal Tap drummer’ but that still sucks badly she’s great and at 30 she’s not going to get many more shots at Olympic gold.

Poor lass can’t get a break.

    Owwwwwwwwweeeeee

(We had a night out in the Cavern in Liverpool at the end of my uni course. One lad was cutting some shapes on the dance floor when a lass accidently stood on his foot as he overbalanced. Open tibia & fibia fracture with gert lots of screaming and blood.
He was due in Greenland on an expedition a few days later…

I’m glad it’s not just me that does shit like this. “Coming ridign at the weekend” “Nah I broke my thumb opening a jar of coffee”

“Nah I broke my thumb opening a jar of coffee”

The former Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas missed the world cup after he dropped a bottle of aftershave on his foot the night before the tournament started🫣

A big fall or brittle bones.

The sad effect of the scandals in cycling over the last 30 years and my own questions over the current crop of cycling superstars makes me naturally leap to steroids and osteoporosis.

Either way, it makes for a sad world whether it’s a correct assumption or not.  Thank you Bjarne, Richard, Jan, Lance, etc.

Really…really…is that the way you want to play it?

A tiny fall most likely, with a twist or over an object which acted as a lever. Very easily done

    Seriously?

You need to give your head a wobble

    Why’s that?

    British cyclists don’t cheat?

    Female British cyclists don’t cheat?

British Cycling wouldn’t go to extreme lengths to retain their funding?

Sadly, I’m now hugely cynical about all things cycling and am curious how a strong fit woman who’s career is defined by the strength of her leg muscles manages to incur significant breaks in her legs.

My point is that cycling is a tainted sport to me thanks to the historical cheating which is so sad that it tarnishes  to me the current crop, be it Pogacar winning so convincingly in the Giro or an Olympian with an umusual leg break.  After all, it wasn’t that long ago that seemingly healthy cyclists were suffering from heart failure…..

Our MR team sees strong, fit hillwalkers trip and sustain similar injuries to Katie Archibald with monotonous regularity, as in 20-30 incidents per year. Fracture/dislocations with ligament damage are pretty much our specialty from a first aid perspective.

I know 2 people to have done similar in the past 6 months. One, remarkably similar – maybe even more innocuous a fall, v similar results with long Ti rod nearly a foot long driven  down the middle of the bone to stabilise it. In education, not the pro Pelton.

You don’t need to be a Pro Doper to do this.

If that means what I think it means then you’re bang out of order. The person in question was a friend to many of us on here

I think this thread has just taken a dark and fairly cynical turn and would hope and expect that the majority of us would simply want to empathise with Katie and wish her well in a swift recovery while hoping she can ignore some of the slightly veiled accusations above.
