  • Just how do you pronounce SRAM..?

I've always said it as "Es Ram"…

But the Aussie guy in the bike shop today looked at me like I was bit odd when I said that…. then again, he usually does that.

    He said "Shhraaam"

But that doesn't follow at all – there's no H in there for a start. 😕

There was a guy called Stuart who called it Es-Ram in our local shop. Now they call him Es-Tuart.

As in walking into the LBS and saying "I'd like a SRAM Shimano rear mech please"

This is more light hearted thread than the last one I was on

    You don't – it's an acronym

[pedant mode]If it is an acronym, it would be pronounced ssram (like RADAR, which is an acronym, is pronounced raydar).

If it's an abbreviation, which is what I think you mean, it would be pronounced S-R-A-M (like LSD, LED, LCD, which are all abbreviations etc)

    [/pedant mode]

    Anyway, I say ssram

The chaps I meet on the Shraam stand from the UK distributor called it Shraam. I'm happy to go with that, TBH

Actually… IHN, LCD, LED etc are not merely abbreviations, they're actually initialisms.

SRAM is not though, it's an acronym, which I've always pronounced exactly as it looks.

As Uplink has alluded it's an IT thing.

If you were brought up with RAM, VRAM (VEE ram), DRAM (DEEram), NVRAM (EN VEE ram) etc. then it's logical to say ES ram.
But don't start me on SCSI (S C S I) which should never be pronounced "scuzzy" which is what Italians say when they don't understand you!

Agree with Dirt Mag, but it's not S-RAM, that's just as daft. It's just sram.

I pronounce it “Sram” basically it’s the word Ram with an S on the front, I guess like the word “Ceramic” without the final “IC” Syllable, that’s just how I read it from day one….
It’s not hyphenated so S-RAM doesn’t seem right, I’ve heard it pronounced “Saaram” in the past as well as “Es-RAM”, you hear “Shram” used a lot but unless you have a lisp why would you be adding an H?

Strange really that they’ve Grabbed/Acquired half the Global market for Bicycle parts yet nobody seems 100% certain how to pronounce their actual name…

We use a lot of “TLAs” (Three Letter Acronyms) at work, to the point where many are just a running joke… If they don’t form an obvious word or syllable of there own then we tend to just use the Letters, maybe it should just be “S.R.A.M” at least then everyone would know what you were on about…

What I find funniest though is the idea of Dirt’s writers lecturing anyone on spelling and/or Grammar…. Pot, Kettle, Black anyone?

its not spelling or grammar its pronunciation

and dirt is all about the vernacular

In general it's correct use of language, not something that you generally find in Dirt…

I used to call it ESS-RAM but people looked at me funny. One guy in the LBS even corrected me. Now I conform.

'Schram' also sounds like eastern european vernacular for 'todger'. 😀

I would always say 'Mah-RIN' County, but 'Ma-rin' bikes, conformity I guess.

Sugoi is another good one, we all say 'Soo-goy' but it's actually a French-Canadian company and pronounced 'soo-shwa'.

If you say it as read i.e. sram, that's a colloquial term for s**t in Polish….so you could say that they're a load of s**t….bet they never thought of that when marketing it! 😆
