Just in the garden fettling with the bike. My wife came out to hang out on the decking. Chatting away, and I casually mention I’d like another bike. She said “Sounds like a good idea”.

Is she having an affair? Has she ordered something mega expensive? Was I dreaming?

You are aware of sarcasm right?

It’s a fever dream, dial 111 immediately and get some medical advice.

Or, call her bluff and get one ordered. At least that way you will find out the real agenda.

Has she mentioned a new patio?

Buy one and see what happens. Keep us updated on how it goes please.

My money is on a gentle remark about a new bathroom or kitchen within a couple of days. Perhaps respond to that by raising the prospect of a new patio to replace the decking.

I think she just loves you very much and wants you to be happy. (See also, reply 1)

She’s probably just thinking you deserve another bike; and the house account can just about afford £300 like you told her the last one cost.

That is basically the same as “do whatever you think is best ”

    Proceed with extreme caution

That’s my day job, and we’ve done the kitchen and bathroom in the last few years, and the decking was last summer.

    Molgrips must be right!

I’ve never found choosing a new bike or spec easy, bit of a pain if I am honest. A few years ago, after much hand wringing and angst, I showed my wife the mtb I’d settled on, her only comment was ‘haven’t you always said its better to get the next spec up as you get much better equipment for your money’.

Good point I thought, the resulting summerhouse has a cedar shingle roof !

If she says get a size XL, her boyfriend is massive.

    Can confirm.

My gravel bike isn’t the same colour as any of my MTB’s and has funny shaped handlebars. I’m sure she noticed, but she’s not said anything yet. It’s been 6 months and I have to go through every painful moment when I fetch it out, wondering if today is the day

Whatever it is you did, whenever you did it, she knows. This is just the beginning. Run.

Have you considered the possibility she wasn’t listening and had glazed over / was just agreeing?

Alternative take – what has she done that she’s distracting you from by offering a new bike?

Most of my bikes were bought for me by Mrs kilo as she was getting a new bike at the time herself – choose well, choose once 😉

Has she taken a covid test? Delirium is very real.
