    How is the weather?

I’m not on any of the big social medias anymore so I can’t just look it up but I’ve been forwarded pictures of floods, blocked roads and landslides.

I’ve been there in the past and seen torrential rain for 20 hours a day, every day for weeks on end, so I know it can really tip down. I still enjoyed the riding though (mostly). The cleaning and bike maintenance was a nightmare.

It doesn’t look fun at the minute, it looks like it might be serious for some people.

Hopefully it’s not as bad as it looks in the grainy screenshots I have. Also, I hope this isn’t the theme for the summer as we’re going out there in a month for the first time in 5 years.

Yep, it was pretty intense for an hour. Most of the roads are blocked with what I would call minor landslides.

I rode this morning until lunchtime & it was half a day from being all time dirt, although some of the Pleney off piste had patches of absolute death still, from being deep in the woods.

Other than this, I would say the weather is as it usually is, hot, with showers for the next week or so.

    Hows the snow level?

Been here since Saturday. Sunday / Monday have been dry but Sundays riding was an absolute slop fest due to previous rain.

Mostly good yesterday and much better today but stuff well into the woods (we can’t ride off-piste) is still wet.

Then this afternoon it absolutely pisses down causing aforementioned issues. We sensibly headed back before this happened. Still raining slightly now and due to rain all day tomorrow but after that it’s looking scorchio.

    Summer 2013?

It was horrific. I think it rained for 40 days in a row. I tell you what though, my mud riding skills improved 1000% that year

You know what, it might well have been 2013! Certainly somewhere from 12 to 14. I know I still had my YT Tues DH bike and was riding a pair of Shortys and sliding around like I was on ice. It was great fun but I was riding in soggy, gritty clothes every day, I went through stacks of brake pads and I had to replace every bearing when I got home.

I was so upset that I drove back down about 6 weeks later for another attempt and it was perfect.

Just seen from a mate of a mate on Facebook – looked absolutely torrential this afternoon. Muddy floods down all the runs and flowing down onto the roads.

(this might or might not be any use but) in 2013 when people were having to wear snorkels at morzine we were like 2 hour’s drive away in La Thuile and Pila absolutely dying in the dust, the mountains can seriously trap and localise weather and the mont blanc massive especially, so if you’re out there and it’s grim it’s always worth looking at what’s reasonably drivable. Though road disruption’s not so good for that!

    Looks absolutely banging this morning.

Point being – remember that pretty much every Alpine Resort always has an excellent section of webcams, you can look through the history day by day.

Blue skies & sunshine today, but there is quite a bit of devastation from yesterday. Some roads will be shut for a few days while they clear debris out of the way & I am giving riding a miss as it will be carnage on the trails I expect.

Went for a run today up to Nyon & down to SJD & there is a hell of a lot of debris about, with some bits turning into a landslide scramble.

Looks like it should be hot & dry for a few days after today then a bit showery, so normal alpine weather really.

A long dumping of less heavy rain this afternoon though. We just mooched around town today.

    Pleney tomorrow, should be interesting.

Watching this thread with interest as we’re leaving in the van at 3.30 Sat morning and it’s my first visit…

I’m sure you’ll enjoy your first trip whatever happens. The riding is always good as long as the lifts are running. It helps if you know which areas to head for in different conditions but it doesn’t take long to learn your way around.

I’m driving down at the end of July for 2 weeks. Can’t wait. Last trip was 2018 before the world turned upside down.

@sharkattack are you on your own?

I’m driving there at the end of July too. Staying in Les Gets, 27th July to 3rd August.

Will be riding with my lad and his Sheffield Uni mates, let me know if you want to hook up for a ride.

I’ll be on my own on the second week. I’m driving down overnight on the 18th. Got a week of family stuff planned. First time going away with Junior so that will be interesting.

Then they’re flying home and I’m checking into Riders Refuge for a week. I know, I’ve played a blinder.

Not sure what bike I’ll be on yet. The new build is going to go down to the wire.

@sharkattack that is absolutely genius and something I have wondered about. I’m desperate to have an alps riding holiday but have no one to do it with, missus and young’un love the mountains for a holiday but no interest in MTB at all. Last summer in Switzerland was unbearable looking up at all the trails I could have been riding instead of walking!

So maybe I drive down, I dont mind the long drive at all, means I have loads of room for my bike and the tent, and can sneak some riding in before/after, her and the kids do MAN-GVA or whatever and I collect them from the airport. Bosh, winner all round.

I’ve been down a few times on my own since mates started getting married and having kids. We’ve been missing it ourselves for 5 years now but dying to get back there.

I always stay with Riders Refuge and there’s loads of people around including solo travellers. There’s always someone to ride with but I like going out on my own so either way I’m happy. There’s always loads of good craic at the dinner table on an evening.

I’ll be dropping the family off at GVA on Saturday 27th then racing back to town! Checking out on the 3rd of August.

I’m driving over with Mrs ColP and the dog, a few stops somewhere in France then picking my lad up from GVA on the 27th.

I’ll be on a red YT Tues

My son’s there now, with a bunch of Uni mates. Weather looks glorious from the photo he sent, but his bike is pretty filthy.

The next few days are looking a bit spicy. Nevermind I’m sure it’ll be absolutely perfect this time next week .
