I wouldn’t give up hope on compatibles. I think most of the problem is the quality control chain between factory and seller. If a seller gets a good source then there shouldn’t be a problem. I bought a compatible battery off this seller on ebay: http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/digilanduk/?_trksid=p4340.l2559 his feedback score is rather good, I don’t see any evidence of people getting dodgy batteries from him. He must be sourcing quality controlled ones. He also offers a 3 year warranty which is surprising with these compatibles so he must be sure of his source.
The one I got registers fine, although (and I’m using linux so have more data available) it only registers 91-93% full when charged. £22 instead of £90 though.
Here’s the current data, basic web browsing, wifi on, with my screen brightness up on max for a Dell 1520 replacement they sell @ 7800mah:
Panasonic
DELL GR9867
Energy 66.8wh
energy design 56.6wh
rate 22.7w
voltage 12.2v
time to empty 2.9hrs
The battery was accepted without complaint by the laptop, had about 33% on it when I stuck it in. Make sure your power management software winds down your laptop at a safe minimum as draining a modern battery kills it.
