See that is where they went wrong. If they had just had a mobile pop-up cafe it would have all been fine….

Try that with the council then see how much they charge for the patch/location or even allow you to do that in that area …

As with most shops the value is in the location, as that is the unique asset. Hence the financial power is with the landlord not the shop owner. If you pay a fortune for a coffee on a train platform, it’s British Rail (or whoever) making the money, not the coffee stand.

Blaming a cereal shop is just moronic beyond comprehension.

They weren’t, as I understand it. The protest was in Brick Lane generally, and someone threw paint at the cereal shop.

I was out in the Peoples Republic yesterday. Its a fiver a pint in most of the bars now its been colonised by the BBC Shoreditch invasion.

Absolutley crying out for a cereal bar, I’d say 😉

Is that a hunch or do you know it to be a fact?

I would be very surprised if the bulk of the cost of a cup of coffee on a train platform went on rent.

I’m sure that the price of a coffee would remain the same even if their stall was rent-free. Pricing is often based on “what can we get away with”.

I have to confess that I don’t have all the rental figures for every coffee stand by a train platform to hand right now.

However, the business case is heavily weighted in the landlord’s favour as they have the only unique asset. Costa/Pret/Starbucks are all selling effectively a commodity (over priced mediocre coffee).

To quote Real Estates Concepts: A Handbook

Tim Hartford shows in The Undercover Economist, coffee shop rents are highest in the best locations such as train stations

Which is a good book BTW (Tim Hartford, not the Real Estates one).

Fair enough. I don’t dispute that rents very significantly affect business costs, indeed isn’t that one of the primary objections of gentrification? I think it would be naive to dismiss the “what can we get away with” element of pricing though.

I don’t disagree, most shops try and charge as much as the market will stand, but the landlord is probably making the highest return on investment (esp if he has owned for some time) and is often forgotten about especially when people are throwing paint or waving pig heads about in the street.

fwiw, i wish more cafes had the option of a £3 bowl of cereal.

breakfast ‘out’ usually means some configuration of egg and bacon (which i don’t always want), for £7.

If you don’t charge x3 of your cost you are out of business hence only the big multinationals can afford to set up their business chain. Then people complain about not having independent stores.

Weatherspoons do porridge with banana and a drink for around £3.

coffee shop rents are highest in the best locations such as train stations

Of course they are as they have the highest footfall, hence ability to make money. See also putting your produce on the end of the isle in a supermarket costs most money, or putting your book on the table by the door in a bookshop.

It would, but the landlord is also doing that, and knows that they can charge a lot more rent for a coffee shop in a station with high footfall and a captive market than elsewhere.

Its actually and interesting case study to compare McDonalds who have nationally set pricing Vs coffe shops and burger king who don’t. Which is one reason why you dont see so many McD’s in stations or motorway services despite being a much bigger company.

There’s a place in Edinburgh, in Bruntsfield, selling American cereals for £2.95. They set up there because the market was there. They charge £2.95 because people in that part of town will pay that. They didn’t set up in, say, Wester Hailes, because there aren’t people willing or able to pay that there. There are in Bruntsfield- surely capitalising on the situation in an up and coming part of town doesn’t make the cause of rising house prices?

There’s one in Headingley, Leeds. This is because Headingley is full of student idiots.

Then I hope you’ll accept my apologies for misrepresenting you.

There’s a strong sense on this thread (and the root of the story itself) that £3 for a bowl of cereal is a rip-off. I simply picked a few comments that seemed to show that.

I’m assuming the protesters don’t have a problem with what people pay for breakfast, simply what they’re eating. No greasy spoons got paintbombed?

    Beer? 8)

I would go back and paint bomb them – you are getting seriously ripped off.

Seven quid for egg and bacon (or bacon and egg) that you don’t even like is an absolute disgrace.

£3 for a bowl of cereal?

What about £2 for a shot of rubbish spirit in a pub? Fives shots pay for the bottle, another two pay for the bar staff to pour them, 21 shots left…

Don’t see many pubs getting attacked.

Brick lane though, not that bad, was there a few years ago before it got really trendy, no worse than similar areas in plenty of cities I’ve visited. Even spotted the obligatory hooker out looking for business by Tower Hamlets. I can see why locals are upset, progress doesn’t have to equate to social cleansing.
