How much is a portion of chips?

No normal person can comfortably eat that amount of chips in one go.

I’ve never understood this argument. I don’t have the industrial quantities of fat, grease and MSG at home that make all takeaway food super delicious! As for not being able to comfortably eat a portion of chips by, I don’t even know what to say. When I was working long hours in a manually intensive job I used to eat a Domino’s meal deal for four by myself.

Always disappointed by cheesy chips when I’ve had them in the UK. A bit of cold, dry, cheap cheddar grated over the top of typical British chips* is not ‘cheesy chips’.

the cheese needs to be melted and velvety – like a nacho dipping sauce or a thick, cheesy gravy texture.

*thick cut, barely cooked beyond raw in the middle with a pale brown soft ‘crust’ creating what at best is warm, oily potato. 🤢

Where do you get your free oil from?

I just checked, I live three doors away from a mediocre chippy.  £2.50 for regular chips, £5.00 for a fish.

The good chippy down the road is comparable prices, but a “small” chips will easily feed two as a main or three as a side.

Cambridgeshire village £2.50 standard, £3 large and the standard is enough for two people.

Bristol suburb £3.30 – £5, though the standard size is a big portion.

Somerset village £3.20 standard size which is a big portion, and really good chips.

Bridlington £3 for a medium portion.

It may only be potatoes but don’t forget how expensive electricity is / has been for commercial premises.

I would content that it is scientifically impossible to be full when eating (good) chips. The only thing that stops your eating is the end of the bag (and the shop being too far away to get another one) or titanic levels of self control because of ‘health’.

Checked tonight. Fish £6, regular chips £2, large £2.50. The large did 3 of us. 2 fish between 3.

Just been to a posh seafood restaurant in Edinburgh for birthday tea. Fish and chips was £25 with minted pea puree and caper butter. Pricey, yes. Amazing, yes. (And that was just the kid’s dinner 😐 )

I used to have lightly battered fish and half a portion of chips for c8 quid.  Far too many chips, not been for 2 years.

Actually, cycled to keswick last month so went to the one in the square, 15 quid sit in and they gave me about 4 pints of chilled water to rehydrate.  That alone warranted a fiver tip, may be 16 quid and 4 quid tip but it was good.

I love chips (One of my weaknesses…).  I couldn’t manage a large portion from a decent fish & chip shop though.  I may be an outlier.  I also can’t do a large piece of fish – if I have to have cod, I go for mini cod.  To be honest and this diverges from this thread – I think plaice, haddock and hake are superior.  Any fish I can’t manage – once I have removed the batter – the cat loves.

I don’t want to make anyone feel jealous, but we went away to Cornwall for Whitsun and we had seaside fish and chips twice.

£3 small, £4 reg, and £5 large at the best chippy in this part of Surrey. Large is enough for 2-3 people. Fish is pricey, eg large cod £12.50, but it’s big and full of flavour.

£3.70 for a large portion at the chippy around the corner from me but a) they’re good chips and b) a large portion easily does 2 people. Small portion is £2.50 and still enough for me (and I like my food).

I haven#t eaten local, but I’d expect it to be £5 or 6 for just a portion of chips.

Last summer I agreed to grabbing lunch for the 2 boys at harry ramsdens on bournemouth beach.  I actually asked them if they’d made a mistake with the bill!

Blimey, a small portion in my area (S.Hants) is £4.80! Large £6.

Not really related to the question but just had fish and chips at the Chatsworth Farm Shop – the most amazing light and non greasy batter, perfect triple cooked chips and a lovely mushy/garden pea combo.

£15 but it was my dad’s father’s day treat.

Not sure about the price but it’s years since I’ve had chippy chips that are actually cooked properly, and fish batter that isn’t so sopping with oil it gives you the shits.
