  • How much is a portion of chips?

Daughter is away in UK with step.kids and went to a chippy for a couple of portions of chips.

    She texted me the price.

Not eaten chips from a chippy since pre COVID so  I was shocked by the price.

So being out of economic reality can I ask,

How much is a standard portion of chips where you are?

About £2.50 I think for a standard portion. Like all restaurants and takeaways prices have gone up considerably in recent years.

Honestly have no idea. Guessing about £2.50 or £3. Only really buy with fish and curry or gravy and just  accept the price for the package deal!

Similar. £2.50 to £3, depending whether ‘normal’ or ‘large’. I think the fish portions went up to £8 each recently, but they’re quite big. Which isnt such a bad deal, considering we’re a good way from the sea.

£2.40 when I bought some a couple of weeks ago. And that was for a “small” portion.

Still ridiculously large though. Spuds must be very cheap otherwise I can’t see why the portions are so generous. No normal person can comfortably eat that amount of chips in one go.

£2.80 for a v small portion here though as even having ten chips fills me & can safely say stuffed!

£2.99 for small, £3.99 for regular.

I remember when £3.20 would buy you cod and a large portion of chips from the local chippy.

    Fish is £3.50 I think.

£4 for a small in my local chippy. Small is just about enough for 2 people. Cod to go with the chips? That’ll be another £8.50 please.

Dunno about 1 portion, But a jumbo sausage & chips from my local is £3.90.

Was £3.50 about a year ago, then it went up to £3.75, and just recently gone to £3.90.

Fish supper is a tenner or thereabouts these days although pre COVID we got tapped up for 14 quid once in st Andrews. We shared one between us

Seems to be a big variation by location though, got a cracking supper in Kilmarnock for 6 pound not long ago

My local in Bristol is £2.90 for a small, £3.90 for a large.

We normally get a small between the two of us, and don’t usually finish it!

Around £3.50 for medium chips at local takeaways (South East England).  Most Medium portions are easily enough for 2 though. Up from around £2.50 two years ago. It’s the fish you need a mortgage for! Medium cod was around £4 a couple of years a go, now £6 to £8 (not including chips).

When I were a lad it was 15 pence a portion of chips, scrapings were a penny

Mars bars were 9p, and I remember the outrage when they went to 11p and my pocket money was no longer enough for one

Agreed. Mrs Slow and I make do with one between us.

Reminds me of the chippy in Settle years ago. I just wanted a fish.

    “What so no chips”?

    “Yes, just a fish please”.

    The fish arrived wrapped.

“I’ve put you a few chips in”.

Paid 3.15 for small chips on my lunch break today from tourist/seafront chippy.

We usually find a single large chips for two adults and two under 8s from our local is sufficient. Can’t remember price, but the days of fish’n’chips being chip are gone.

Err….3 quid I think,  that is the standard,  3.50 for large.   You won’t eat a large.  A standard is huge and feeds 2.

Think it was 3 quid for a bag of chips the other day in Cockermouth.

The chippy used to be the cheap takeaway compared to pizza or Chinese but it’s not so different these days.

Had haddock and chips in Bingley a couple of weeks ago for the excellent price of £8 (would be £11.50 in my local chippy in Bristol).

    Really? You’d be surprised…

When I were a lad it was 15 pence a portion of chips, scrapings were a penny

When I were a lad, a large bag with a shovelful of scrumps was 6d. The chippy was roughly halfway home from the cinema, I’d still be munching away by the time I got home.
*sigh* I really miss the scrumps with salt and vinegar, you could just get a bag of those if you just needed a snack. ‘Looks whistfully off into the distance…’

Oh, and I’m not sure how much chips are, there’s three chippy’s I use, it depends on where I am and what time of day, and whether I’ve got any cash – one only takes cash. Possibly £3-3.50 🤷🏼

Cheap as chips remember them days eh 😀

A lot of things seem to have gone stupid now. I look around at less fashionable businesses (non American brands, things not backed by social media trends) and there’s a lot that look deserted most days of the week. Looks like there’s going to be another shit load going under.
