I’ve got an upcoming journey from my hometown to mid-Wales, with a bicycle.

Guess how many (printed-out, because it’s a bike reservation natch) tickets I’ve got for the journey, including the collection receipt?

I’ll give you a bit of a clue, it’s a return and there are two changes in each direction.

Is the clue in the title?  Just the one ticket?  Like when I get a travel card for a day in London?

Two bike ones per leg = 12 + one for the human per leg = 6  Total 18?

Might ‘only’ be two changes (I used to get a train up from Cardiff to Bangor, so I remember how that used to go with Valley Lines etc) but I imagine you also have some split ticket goodness in there too, yes?

Plus receipt, and I’m betting different train company gives different receipt so that’s 25….

None – you’ve decided to drive

    13?

edit – I see the ante has been considerably upped in the time it took me to type that first guess

Which part is the replacement bus service?

That’s only announced about 2 hours after you’re left abandoned on some desolate, wet station with a couple of train loads of passengers and two poor station staff trying to hold the peace…

13 – 1 receipt, but 4 tickets for each leg x 3 – 1 ticket each way for you and 1 ticket each way for bike.

Edit – changing this guess to 21 as there will be a confirmation ticket to confirm the booking on each leg (there and back)!

Nope. An off peak return, because I’ve had issues with split tickets before.

So if I had split tickets there would be even more of the buggers.

Noone’s got it yet, but 25 is too high.

3 legs each way = 6 legs, 3 tickets per leg = 18 and a receipt so 19 in total.

But you said not split fare so only 1 passenger ticket each way so 15 in total.

    I reckon 15 as well.

    1x outbound for person
    1x return for person
    1x collection receipt
3x bike tickets outbound (one for each leg)
    3x bike ticket counterparts outbound
    3x bike tickets return
    3x bike tickets counterparts return

    So-

    2 tickets

    6 seat reservations

    12 bicycle reservations

    and 1 collection receipt!

    I’m going with 21

I agree with the 15 for the journey and bike, but I’m going to add a seat reservation for each train.

Edit: Curses, just after the actual answer!! Should have hit refresh before reply.

I recently took a return from Southampton to Leamington Spa which is direct service. Due to the wonders of split ticket pricing I got a return Southampton to Reading, a single to Didcot, a return Didcot to Leamington Spa and a single Didcot to Reading. Each direction on the returns was an individual ticket.

Okay, it was ‘only’ 6 tickets but it was a direct service and I was travelling on my own. It did save about £50 but took ages for the guy at the ticket desk to work it all out.

Splitsave is great right up until you miss a connection.

I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt, well done!

Ah dammit failed to consider seat reservations. Rookie error!

It’s just so damming of the archaic and disrupted railway in the UK that in 2024 this is still ‘a thing’.

Yeh I a return from Arbroath to Inverness with a change at Aberdeen not long ago with the bike and seat reserved. Split save too. I had half a rainforest to go through and figure out what I actually needed and when.

By the time they’d all printed out there was a bit of a queue behind me too!

Originally I was going all the way to Brora return, but thankfully my mate took pity and picked me up from Inverness ,which saved another half day on the train , otherwise I’d have needed another pannier for all the tickets lol!
