It’s taken a while, but we have had a fair bit of timber milled now.

Fourteen hours work has got us structural stuff to rebuild our damaged 45sqm deck.
Bridge beams. Some of the wood that will become a new bed. Slabs that will become desks and a bed head and integrated bedside  tables.

    Timber on its way

Still a fair bit to go though…

Deck is long since finished. Under a new roof.

But the furniture slabs aren’t quite dry enough and the furniture maker has moved out of his shed with kiln…

So this morning we went to pick up the Tallowwood slabs for the island bench and outdoor table.

Brought them back to my in laws and put them into our makeshift container kiln… it was pretty warm in there today on a cool overcast day, as the weather warms up it should do a good job.

Each slab weighs around 100kg so it was fun getting them in with a 75 year old! Hope I’m that strong when I get to that age.

Those splits/cracks might get worse over time. You can negate that by cutting ‘butterfly’ shaped double dovetail thingies into it.

I think the word dyna-ti is scrambling for is bowties.

We went with the Tallowwood for the bench instead of Blackbutt as it’s apparently less prone to splitting… I guess we’ll see.

Butterfly keys is another name for them. I’ve got a book about a Japanese furniture maker who uses them, which I bought about 30 years ago, and they’re called Butterfly keys in there. I’d never heard of them before.
