Just in the process of building up my first singlespeed - a slot dropout Scandal 29er - and trying to work out what I'm going to do in terms of drivetrain...
Got an LX chainset from my 456 which I'm planing on using with a new chainring, and have already bought the On-One 29er wheelset which I'm intending to use with a converter kit (not yet bought).
I'm currently thinking of finding a combination of chainring / cog which will let me run a 9 speed chain - at least meaning that I can just carry the same 9 speed powerlink with me regardless of which bike I'm riding, and chains will be common so I'll always have a spare at home.
Is that just daftness? Anyone got experience of chainring/conversion kit/cog/chain which work well like this. Thinking probably Surly/On-One/Blackspire...
... Or should I just get a beefy 1/8" chain and have done with it?
I did it for a whole winter and it was fine. It was a well used chain, too
There is no advantage to a 1/8th chain. 9 speed chain will be fine.
So is the on-one conversion kit & stainless chainring 9 speed compatible (website claims 'will work with 1/8 and 3/32 chains' but info on what width a 9 spd chain is seems to vary!)?
should be fine.
i have no issues with 8sp, and the links themselves should be the same size? just closer together on a 9sp
I've never run anything other than 9speed chains of my singlespeeds.
