Just about to press the BUY button on an SLX double chainset…but it’s just occured to me I may need a matching front mech? Do I?? I am currently running a double+bash converted from a triple so front mech has just had the top stop tightened. Can i assume current mech is good for prospective new crankset?

Yeah it will work mate a double specific would do the job better but you wont have any problems

Did the same as you a couple of years back & switched from a triple to double & bash.

I’ve always used the original mech/shifter arrangement – I just adjusted the limit screw to prevent the mech being able to shift up onto the top ring.

Adjusting the limit screw on a normal triple front mech will work fine. The difference with the double-specific one is mainly that the shape of the cage matches a 36T chainring.
