Five Guys?

Got a Five Guys opening near me soon. Apparently they are amazing. Anyone been and can share their experiences?

mediocre burger, big price. Fries are good though.

Very good in the US, where they are cheap as, erm, chips, but good burgers, good chips and good service.

UK seems to be cashing in on that popularity.

Breaks the golden rules.

– don’t eat in chain restaurants.
– don’t eat somewhere with pictures of the food.
– don’t eat anywhere that has a massive menu. Means a massive freezer.

Pretty average overpriced burger, set in a crappy environment IMO. Was hoping for greatness, but not a patch on what they are in the US

We went to the one in MK. The chips were quite nice and you get a lot, but the burger was just ok, bun nothing special. The place was filthy (as in tables and floor, not necessarily the kitchen being unhygenic). It costs a lot for what you get.
The OH is a bit picky when it comes to meat (flirts with going veggie). She went for the veggie option and it was just a plasticy cheese slice, onion, gherkin and a bit of salad. It was packed so tightly in a foil wrapper it was just a squidgy mess that looked like it had been kicked around the floor for a while.

It just seems horrendously expensive for what is in effect a fast food place.

I really like it. Not that cheap it must be said. But bloody tasty.

The soft drink machine is quite cool. Although you end up with some pretty nasty versions of coke with a hint of dodgy sweet fruit.

If paying £45 for a burger (for the three of us) I’d much prefer GBK.

Have been in the US. Wouldn’t bother. Mediocre cheap burgers in my experience.

Best thing about the chain is the potential for innuendo in the name.

Shit! Maccy D’s is bad enough. This is the same crap for twice the price.

We went to the one in Bluewater and I thought it was a damm fine burger.
Harvester’s seem to now have the same gimicky Coke machine with flavours except it’s Pepsi.

Been once, never again.

Marginally better than McDs, marginally cheaper than Handmade Burger Co.

A seriously overpriced and underwhelming experience.

Was done 2 months ago. I think the consensus was some people love it, others think it’s overpriced fast food.

If you ever get a chance, try Din Tai Fung. Fast food that breaks every one of those “rules” above, but ranks among the finest meals I have ever had. And I’ve been many, many times! (Waves at Ben over in Singapore if he’s reading!)

What does Din Tai Fung do where are they? I’m away quite a bit with work so exhausted the possibilities of pretty much every chain restaurant. Even on expenses, I wouldn’t give other peoples money to 5 guys.

I LOVE a really nice burger, and I do fancy trying it out, but the prices put me off – reminds me of Hagen Daz or however it’s spelt, a high price almost just to prove how good it is. I think it would cost £50 for the 4 of us.

The concept is we’re a generation that grew up with Wimpy, Macs and Burger King and don’t really seem to know what else to eat now that were grown up, so the best we can manage to do if we want to look and feel like adult is buy kids food at a price that children can’t afford.

Is this what happens when these youngsters grow up?

jazzed up frozen bidivest finest cooked in peanut oil. i worked on the trafford centre one last year on the build better burgers in local pubs with melted blue cheese in the middle and fresh brioche buns and not long life ones.

I ate at the one near Oxford Circus. Quite horrible environment – crowded, noisy, messy – but I confess to having enjoyed the burger and fries.

The best burger I’ve ever had was cooked by some bloke in the kitchen of Brewdog in Manchester. He also came out to ask if it was OK. Bollocks to mass produced chain fodder.

it does make me wonder how taste buds differ between people. five guys to me is like a posh golden arches.. its all pre prepped food from the old 3663 trucks coated pre cooked fries that anyone can buy.. its mental.

took a five guys fan to a local place that do american style food. he had the boarder burger with mexican twist .. he no longer eats at five guys…

best burger ever was from a small pub in the middle of bugger all in oban in scotland had bits of stliton inside and crispy onions with fresh salad on a sour dough roll and again the chef came out and asked if i was happy. i asked for another to be made up but not cooked. he obliged and made me 3 to take back to hotel so i could freeze and take home next day.

One has sprung up near me.. I can’t say I’m tempted to be honest.

Ones opened in Leicester, looked at the menu through the window, £6.95 for a burger! Yeh righto . . .
It was pretty busy though, but the Mc Donald’s opposite is currently closed and undergoing a refit.

The best “American Style” burger in the UK is by The Beefy Boys in Hereford. They came 2nd at the World Food champs last year and 7th this year. Also won Grillstock this year.

The second best burger, gourmet this time, is by The Rule of Tum Burger Shop. Also in Hereford.

I’m spoiled.

Walked into the one in Cambridge the other day, saw the prices, walked out.

I live above a restaurant which does a bigger burger, made on site from local cows, with chips and salad, in a bun that was made that morning on site for less money.

You’d have to be a total mug to pay those prices for that food.

Sbob i felt mugged off when we finished the job and got free meals……

I was rather disappointed that they only had one cup…

sbob – when in Cambridge seek out Steak and Honour, it will however ruin every burger you ever eat again as none will be as good.
