Tonight I was told that a guy I’ve known for many years died at the weekend.

If you are an old windsurfer or paddle boarder you’ll probably have heard of Farrel O’Shea and know what he has achieved.

He died doing what he loved at a speed sailing event – he will be missed.

The real point of this is that he was 61 and fit and anyone I know….. I’m just 6 days younger.

Live your lives people…. Who knows what’s around the corner.

So sorry to hear that. Definitely too young but there is a lot to be said about dying doing something that you love doing and also being spared deteriorating health.

Yeah, that news saddened me. He’s always been someone I looked up to as a windsurfing mad teenager.

He did come across as one of life’s good guys.

Did he have a T shirt business back in to the mid 90’s? I brought an O’Shea t-shirt in Keswick that has a great design on it, it’s currently framed and hanging in my garage

aren’t we honour bound at this point to say that not getting old sucks harder.

But I agree with E-L. To be cut off in your prime is terrible, but a gradual decline into general decrepitude where nothing works properly and hurts all the time isn’t that compelling either as (checks notes) …. yep I’m hitting that point pretty quickly now.

I was about to say the thing that sucks is that more and more people seem to die.

    My sympathies, dude.

But maybe there is some solace that he does doing what he enjoyed?

Having seen my mum get chewed up by leukaemia, friends by cancer, others of old age and a few friends die of misadventure I know how I’d like to go…..

I remember him doing a corkscrew roll thing on a windsurfer when I was windsurfing at Rhosniger.

It spooked me a little but and impressive trick.

RIP and may you have good wind and fine waves.

Beats the alternative. Until it doesn’t.

Lost a mate a week ago, motorcycle journalist and wheelchair user, 62. Felt bad one day and gone the next. I’ve now about half a dozen FB friends who are pushing up daisies, it’s just a reminder to honour them by getting out and getting on with it.

The made some amazing surf boards, T shirts were just the side line.

I’m guessing Chris Dabbs, who I knew from back in the day when I was also a motorbike hack. Drifted out of touch with him over the years, but he was a lovely guy and it was incredible how positive he was after the big accident. One of the good guys. Very sad to see him go.

And now you’ll never be able to give it back…

Being dead is like being really stupid…

…it upsets those around you more than the actual individual.

    The dead don’t have regrets.

It is known if it was an accident or natural causes?

I met him when I worked at Dave Noble’s windsurf shop back in the day. I was always a bit in awe.

Suspected heart attack – and he was a very fit guy!

Really nice guy.  I first met him when I was selling HyJumpers kit back in the late 80’s and then saw him loads on the beach at Abersoch – only chatted with him 2 weeks ago.

Yep BWD Chris was a live wire, he’d wear me out.
