I don’t think it’s structural but I’m worried that if I do clean it, it’ll look even more dead.

Do NW chainrings get as pointy sharp as the old non-NW chainrings (ie those found on triples/doubles)? If so, then, definitely another hundred at least!

I haven’t seen one go pointy. The Superstar one on my hardtail just started throwing the chain off when it was worn, it didn’t actually look too bad. All the other NW rings I’ve had have been steel and seemed to outlast the bike.

It’s the 2 broken teeth that worry me. Literally just riding along the road and the chain started grinding on something. The chainring was pushing it off the bottom. Only last about half a mile before going quiet again. I guess that’s when the teeth fell off. I don’t think I’d hit it on anything!

That looks like an e13 ring?

Mine lasted just over 1000 miles. It was still fine apart from a couple of damaged teeth that had started to occasionally hook the chain up. I filed them flat with my trusty leatherman and I reckon it would have gone on for a few more 100 miles but changed it for peace of mind.

Indeed it is… E spec for an EP8. It’s done about 2.5k miles so far. It’s the only original part of the bike (and apparently, the most reliable).

1000 miles seems a bit low. What chain were you using? Did you have to change the cassette at he same time?

Shimano 7100 Chain I think. No didn’t change the cassette, it’s fine.

I do think mine just got damaged and then bent a couple of chain links. Or maybe the chain got damaged first and damaged the chain ring.
